Thumbs up New LS1-er, looking at an SS today...

I was wondering if some of you guys/gals could help me out with pricing on an SS I am going to check out today. The specs are:

Supposedly a true SS, Leather, T-Tops, 6 spd, 45K miles, new brakes & new tires. It isnt really modified except for a chip & cat-back exhaust. Also has been garaged. But, it needs a driver's side window motor replaced. My two questions are...how do I determine if it's a true SS (not cloned), and what would be considered a fair price? The owner will sell it for $13k.

I am going to see it soon, and will try to evaluate the condition...maybe that will help.

WU8 RPO code denotes a true SS, it aint one with it. what year is the car? that will determine how good of a deal 13k is.

at least your on the right track with the 6sp

It's a '99. Do you mean without the WU8 RPO it's not a true SS...is that in the VIN? Sorry for the lack of knowledge on this...I'm coming from Mustangs, and the VIN was how you determine a Cobra vs GT (at least on '94-'95s). I may try to get it for 12.5K...I'll definitely run a Carfax at the least.

13k aint bad for a clean 99' SS, try and talk him down a bit though . yes w/o the WU8 RPO code its not a real SS, no if, and, or buts about it. the RPO code listing is on the insider drivers door panel. you wont be able to tell by the VIN, a carfax will come up z28/ss

hey man. i think you are better off buying a 02 z28 for 3k more. trust me, they are just a little quicker than the 99s and respond to everything much better. i paid 13k for my 99ss one year ago and it only had 32k miles. it was bone stock so i think you are paying a little too much. right now where i live they are selling a 02 z28 auto with 18k miles for only 17500 dollars. if you asked me i rather go for the 02z28 rather than a 99ss. however, the ss does have a higher resale value than the z28, but performance wise the 02s run stronger than the 99s.

My cousin has a '02 Z28...definitely a strong runner from the factory. I guess for some reason I just want the "SS". I know performance wise, there isn't even a noticeable difference b/w a Z28 & SS. I've been looking for a month or two...this one just seems like a good deal...if it's real clean.

LOL its the name, SS or Z28, SS package IMO looks better too...but u can always add that stuff to a Z28, (since your coming from stangs) if u were to have a choice between the "cobra" or the "GT" what would u pick....both good cars but one is just known to be better....good luck w/ ur buy though, either car is deffinatly worth the money. If you have time to...go to SLP's website and call the care number and ask for Terry black, he can run the vin for ya and get any info u need if its a true SS.

The WU8 RPO code will be on the GM sticker on the driver side door (if it is there then it is a real SS), just inside, just open it up and look over the option codes on the GM sticker. If it has Y2Y options then there is the possiblity (if it has not been obliterated by the elements) that there are 2 SLP stickers on the car. One below the GM sticker on the drivers door and the option packages added by SLP on the passenger side door.

Hope that helps

13K sounds like a very good deal. I guess I might have paid to much! I just bought a 99 SS with 31K on it for 16,500.00. It is a M6 with T tops. Very clean. IMO, if you want the SS, I would buy it. They only made so many you know, and I think the well cared for SS's will hold their value in the long run over a Z28. Just my two cents worth.

hey man, if what you want is just to say that you have a " ss" camaro then go ahead and get it. however, if you what you want is a strong car that responds better to mods then get the 02 z28 rather than a 99ss. if you did a research here you would find out that there are a lot of "cows" 99 ss camaros. i am not saying that most are but there are a few 99 camaro ss that just never kept up with the rest. ( mine being perhaps one). with the 02 z28 you wont have to worry about that since they are all strong performers. 99's are a hit or miss deal and you never know what you are gonna get.

Speaking from my own experience with my '02 Z28, I would say that you should seriously consider picking up the '02 over a 99 SS. It's solid as a rock as far as performance goes and it's been that way since I picked it up. Not to mention it's very accepting of mods.

I just put a Loudmouth on and I can really tell that there is a difference in power there. Just to make sure I wasn't hallucinating, I threw my girlfriend in the car and she couldn't believe that the Z was gettin' up and goin' faster than normal. Can you tell I'm a little excited about my new exhaust?

Default Dyno graph

My SS

Somebody explain why or what are these SS "cows" whitecamaross is talking about. I had my 99 SS dynoed about a week after I got her, and she produced 298.4 rwhp with 314.0 fpt. And get this, I got the build sheet from SLP and the only upgrades my SS came with were the hood and rear spoiler. The original owner did not even buy the SS floor mats! I had to order all that stuff after I bought her. Since the dyno test stock, I have done the "free air mod" and TB bypass and added SLP LM and SLP "Y" pipe. I have also installed SLP smooth flow bellow and SLP lid. I am sure it will dyno at at least 325+hp at the rear wheels now. I guess this one was not a "cow".
I agree with these guys, only buy the SS if you want to be one of us lucky few that can say you own one.

It won't have SS anywhere. It'll say Z28/IROC (yes, even the 4th gens come up as IROC in a carfax).

As far as the 99's being slow... you can say that about any 98-00 due to it not have the LS6 intake and different cam.

I was afraid of that problem before I bought my 00 after I sold my 01 Z, but absolutely bone stock, my 2000 put down 303.5 rwhp and 319 rwtq. My 01 Z put down 308.5 rwhp and 329 rwtq with a lid, K&N, free mods, and a flowmaster. My 2000 runs better than my 2001 did as well.

I don't blame the cars, I blame the drivers.

I guess it's just that the WS6 & SS are more unique on the road. I have a Mustang GT, I see 20 of them a day. I see like 5 Cobras, WS6s, or SSs a week. I would get a Z or Trans Am...but for some reason I just want the appearance package & badges. Can't really explain it.

Test drove the car today, but it appears it was wrecked...so, no go on that one.

Explain "chip" please I don't know anyone who's "chipped" their 4th gen f-body. Tuned yes, chipped no. If it has been advertised as having a performance chip, I'd stay away from it.

I've had over a dozen LS1's. All years. Yes on a dyno the
newer ones will show slightly better numbers but if you really
can tell the difference on the street between 10 hp your better
than me. That's 3%. Newer ones respond better to mods?
why because of an intake thats worth 6-7 hp combined with those
"greatly" improved exhuast manifolds.

At least with an 01 and up you will get the better clutch and updated hydraulics, and some claim a transmission with better synchro's, not to mention the LS6 intake, and the fact that it does not have EGR.
