you have a Zexel Torsen unit. This is not a true
limited slip unit, it is a torque splitting device.
There are in fact very few true limited slip rear
ends out there, the term is misused. A true limited
slip limits wheel speed relative to the other. Most
traction-improving rear ends work off some sort
of torque sensing scheme.
The base Zexel biases a maximum of 2X the slipping
wheel torque over to the sticky side. This means
once you spin wheel #1, you have a maximum of
3X spinning-tire push in total. Which is better than
the 1X of an open diff and likely worse than a true
limited slip or locker. It also means you should drive
with some technique so as to respect the limits of
adhesion and the lifting effect of drivetrain jerk and
torque on the right rear tire. If you don't, you will
do a one-wheel-peel just like the open diff, only
at 3X the acceleration.

"If it's a Z/28 that didn't run through SLP's shop
you have a Zexel Torsen unit."
That's not exactly true. It depends on the year model. In some years the Torsen was standard while the Auburn was the "upgrade" available with the SS and in other years the Auburn was standard with the Torsen being the "upgrade."
Which is better? That's opinionated. I have formed the opinion that the Torsen is easier to spin one tire only with (not good but it only happens when traction from one side to the other is not comparable) but seems to be a little more durable and does not wear out (no frictions.) Overall I like the Torsen better. I've had both, btw.

Funny thing I find about these threads is nobody can agree who put in what by GM or SLP. I'm lead to believe they put in whatever was sitting on the shelf the day of the installation

`96-`98 Alburn was standard; Torsen was a SLP option for the SS and Firehawk. (My Friend's `98 SS w/o SLP options have an Alburn diff.)
`99-`02 Torsen was standard; a supposedly upgraded Alburn was a SLP option for the SS and Firehawk. (My old `99 SS and `02 SLP SS, as well as my other friend's `99 WS6, have the Torsen diff.)
