This is definitely a newbie question!
So without saying, y'all will know shortly, that I don't know crap about building motors and how they work?? But I'm gonna act like a 3 yr old and ask. What I got to lose? Y'all don't know me!
So I'm putting a ls motor in my mustang build. I've got a 5.3 that I'm using a stock crank with eagle rotating assembly that I bought. I've got a guy helping me that knows most of this but I figured I'd consult with y'all so I might can at least talk a little sense with him. Long story short I want the most horsepower I can make out of the motor and still be streetable. I purchased some afr 205 heads. So my question is, if you want to build a high performance motor, where do you start? Do you start with heads then pick cam that compliments it? Vice versa? How do you know what Pistons to mesh with the rest of it?? That's what I'm having a hard time understanding. What makes a nitrous cut cam different from a NA cam? I'm prolly asking questions way above my pay grade, but I would like to at least have a second grade knowledge of it? And websites or links I could read up on? Sorry for all the questions, but someone here hopefully has a little teacher in them?? Maybe??

See that's what I'm asking? My goal is as much natural aspirated horsepower I can get streetable on pump gas. How does a fella know what parts to pick??? Start with heads then find the other parts that match??
Or start with cam then get heads? You gotta build off something?? Does that make sense?

You might want to narrow it down some more.
You can get 700+ HP naturally aspirated but you'll have to start with an LS7 based build.
You can get 550 HP with a stock cube LS1 on pump gas, but it'll idle very poorly, buck and surge driving around town, get 8 mpg, and eventually fall apart from how high you have to rev it for the massive cam you picked to make any power.
I'd personally just throw a mild cam at the stock long block and a 125 shot of nitrous. If you want to make lots of power and still be able to actually drive the car, power adders are the way to go. A nitrous setup is cheaper than a set of aftermarket heads and will net you 4-5 times the power.

There is no easy or single right answer to your questions. If there were, this entire site would only have a handful of threads and posts.
Some great advice right here:
Check out these links and do some additional searching and reading, once you've better narrowed down your path you can ask more specific questions that will lead to more specific answers.

ok great.. I have been reading up on all of those links. Thanks for posting!
I'm ok with power adders. And was going to put a little nitrous to the car, but if someone calls you out at the stoplight, you need the power then!
I will get things figured out. Guess I want it more street worthy than a track car so I may have to sacrifice power somewhat..
