See Murphinator's posts in the LS1 Rebuild thread above. Finding a pullout motor (upgrading to a 5.3?) is often the better bet than rebuilding.

Rebuilding a LS is basically as easy as rebuilding gen 1 smallblock chevy. Cost depends on the parts you'd want to put in it and how strong you want it. Rebuilding the shortblock back to factory shouldn't cost much at all. Could be as little as cleaning block, crank, rods & pistons, honing bores and only installing new rings, bearings & bolts. All quite inexpensive parts. Any competent machine shop should be able to handle it quickly and with easy.

I'd start looking for a 5.3 engine to replace your 4.8. To keep things simple try and find one with the 706 or 862 heads as they will be 24x systems. To make sure your actually buying a 5.3 carry a bore scope with you and look at the top of a piston. If dished piston its a 5.3 as the 4.8''s came with flat top pistons.
