I would say that they are basically the same. The only major differences would be the intake manifolds(2000??+ cars w/LS6) and the valve cover differences. And the EGR thing that everybody deletes. But for the most part, they are the same. I think the 98s are coming along though as a few of the sponsors now have such good deals on 98 style heads that they might be a better way to go if you plan to get into all that. I had a 98 and it was great. and there are quite a few great deals out there on 98s.

Good luck.

98s are no problem. About the only weak link in them that was very obvious back then were the weak valvesprings. Over-rev the engine once and the pushrods would get bent. After 99s came out, we heard of much fewer pushrod bending issues.

The only main difference is the way the valvecovers bolt onto the head. The 98s have perimeter bolts, the 99+ have four center bolts. The center bolts are much easier to remove, and have more aftermarket stuff like valvecovers and such.

But, 99+ heads will bolt right onto the '98 block, no problem there. Everything else is pretty universal between all 98-02 cars.

I would try and get a 99-02 instead of a 98.

Also the 98s have a different PCM than 99-02 models. Something you have to keep in mind when tuning.

98's have bigger injectors, and i also heard that there was a 1/5 chance that if you own a 98 fbody you would get a 98 C5 cam.
over all the 98 was a good year in my opinion, remember the ls1 was FIRST introduced in the 97 C5, so its not the 'first' year persay.. just my $.02

Talking

I have a 98 and love her to death. Issues that have come my way.. Egr took a crap, T-stat took a crap, bent pushrods (my fault of course) Other than that car is doing great at 62,000 miles. The plastic interior is doing just fine as well as the GM rat skinned leather seats. Body and paint is still looking good/holding up great. Oh and the power windows work just fine. Performance wise the car feels awesome. Overall you should find some geat prices on a 98. It all has to do with how the prevouis owner took care of the car. I keep up and do all the matinance on the car and keep it washed and waxed as often as I can. Good luck. Feel free to ask me any questions!

I owned a '98 back years ago, ran like a bat out of hell. Had a few problems only... just the stupid rear hatch lock and an alt problem, that was it. I had only one mod done to it (Flowmaster ) and the car waxed an M5 BMW once from ~2500rpm in 2nd to redline.

It was an A4, hardtop, 3.23:1 gears, black/tan leather. I miss it.

What makes you say that? I read the list of differences. The 98 seemed to have several advantages and disadvantages over the other years. It also seemed that most of the disadvantages are things that people usually modify anyway.
