im not sure that there is much difference between the two. other than looks of course
Im sure the K&N works well, but most of the guy on this site just get a lid, and a cotton filter. (i think cotton is good for +1-2 hp over paper). Lids are cheaper. MUCH cheaper.

A lid is cheap, easy to find, easily compatible with most other indtake/induction parts, and makes proven power/times. I think that most people who get the K&N do it for the looks and to be "different". I'd say just buy a quality lid and call it good........or go ahead and order a half dozen other affordable bolt-ons then go shopping for a converter.........

im looking at the Best Of Tech guide, spring issue, that all the chevy mags put out together, and the primary focus was LS1 performance. the did a dyno test with K&N FIPK on a stock 2000 SS. on average of 4 runs, stock the car put down 286hp to the wheels. with the FIPK kit, on avg of 4 runs the car dynoed 303hp to the wheels. i just thought i would share this, i dont have any dyno numbers for lids.

Get a lid then an SSRA/FTRA. That will be about the same price as the FIPK and make more power.
And I would stay away from the oil filters. I remember one guy at camaroz28.com dynoning his car with a paper filter and an oil filter and the oil filter caused him to lose 2 horses and 3 torque. And he is most definatly not the first person to say that he did not like them on LS1's.
