Default HPP3 Question...I know, not another

I just got it in today. I changed my shift firmness to 75% and left everything else pretty much alone. I did NOT install their tune.

Anyhow, I was wondering about the fans. I have a stock 195º stat. I was wondering if when I selected that I have that stat, will it still adjust when my fans come on? Could I select a 160º stat so the fans would come on sooner?

What is the stock rev limit on a '98 A4? I moved it to 6k, then back down to 5800. I also want to adjust my shift points for 3.73's. Any suggestions? I've searched for this one and everyone says to just experiment. Any of you have some advice on the shift points?

Only mods so far are, tsp lid, cutout, and gears.

Thanks.

put the stats adjustment on 195 which is what you got. my '98 guage now sits at the first notch in hot summer weather, a/c on, stop and go traffic.... cruising or cool/cold weather, it's a little below the first notch. before it was in the middle (2nd notch).

i was playing with the shift points MPH and under normal driving, it doesn't really hold the shift any longer.

Not sure about the 195 stat I would leave it at 195 for now. I would suggest getting the 160 thermo car will run alot cooler. As for the shift point you really need to be at a track and do the adjustment at WOT. Also If you give it a try just do one shift point at a time. 1-2 so you can see the gain if any then do 2-3 and so on. I tried and it was more of a pain in the *** than anything don't think the gain's are worth the time and effort yet I don't have much patience.

with a performance tuner, do you adjust the shift points by mph or by rpm? because if i get one, id love to have my car shift under WOT at 5500 instead of 6000

You adjust it by MPH with an HPP3, might be different with another one? Our cars shift at 6000? If that's the case, then what is our rev limit? I thought it was 6k?

I want an HP Tuners, but I got this thing for $90 and it does what I need for now.

You set your shifts by RPM. Set your limiter at 6200, your dont wanna go anymore than that due to its a danger to the engine. You could potentially float the valves, do it higher only if your built for it. 6200 is ideal for stock internal. Your 1-2 shift should hit 6100 at wide open throttle. You dont want the needdle to bang or hit the limiter cause all the engine will do if cut off the gas. Adjusting the shift point only affects wide open throttle shift not part throttle. Try +3,+6and +7 or 8 for 3-4. You could even leave 3-4 at stock setting since you wont even get there in the quarter mile. I does help out an A4 Trans. Try different settig and see what works best for you, but these numbers are a good start.

Thanks for the reply. I have 3.73's going in Wednesday, so I'm not gonna mess with the shift points yet. Gonna wait til they go in. I just wanted to know what a safe number was for my rev limiter to be set at and I was gonna set the shift points 100-200 RPM's below it.

I heard not to run their tune?

Give the tune a shot and see how you like it....I do. 100rpm below is EXACTLY what you want, close to the limiter, but dont hit it. Don't set your limiter in the 5k range, you'd be cutting yourself short. 1-2 should should be 6000 +
