Default LS1 mileage

I am going to buy an LS1 car in the next month or so, but what would most of you consider to be too "high" mileage?

I will be adding the basic bolt ons to it and possibly a cam later on.

That's a tough question.... I bought mine almost 4yrs ago & it had 46k on the clock... It now has 86k & with the mods in my sig, she is still going strong... Doesn't smoke nor drink oil, so I consider myself a lucky one being it's a 98'... To help answer your question, I would say maybe no more than 60-70k... Good luck!

My T/A is a 98 with 80k on it and its still strong uses 1/2 qt. every 3000miles, figure about 15-18k per year will get you close.

mileage is relative to the condition. a well kept 98 with 80k miles will be a better buy then a 02 thats been beaten into the ground. just make sure you do a compression and leak down test before any internal mods.

Mileage is no object b/c you will have get a new engine sooner or later b/c you will either want to go faster..or you blew it up by trying to push your stock bottom end too far.

mileage is an object, if not everyone would just buy high as 98-00 mileage cars. not everyone throws on h/c or runs 15psi on the stock bottom end. a lot of people are content with just bolt ons.

Mine has 72,000 on it and runs as good as when I bought it with 47,000 on it. Its how you take care of it. Change the oil, filter, etc. Also like JRP said, there can be a 02 with 30,000 miles on it and was driven hard everyone of them and not taken care of and run like crap and there can be a 98 with 100,000 miles and was taken care of and not ragged on and run great. Hit and miss.

Mileage is relative. It varies case by case. You have to look at the car and drive it. Listen to the motor at idle, at wide open throttle (WOT), check for leaks or squeaks. There are well kept cars w/ over 100k on the odo. If you plan on modding, I'd stick with less than 90k. I bought my 98 Formula already modded (heads/cam) with 84k on the clock. Now it's got 92k and still pulls like a freight train. Just be smart and use any prior car buying experience you have. Hope it all works out.

Your better dollar deal is always going to be high mileage. If you find one with 80-90k and it runs, looks, and drives well then mileage isn't an issue. I know lots of people with 100k on a lightly modded LS1 and they still run strong. Just watch for the piston slap!!

Thanks guys the car I have found that I like is a 98 SS 6 speed with 54k on it. I am just foing to do bolt ons and see how good I can get it to run, so I am not set on adding a cam, but you know how modding goes once you start you can't stop.

Can't wait to hear from you in the "Internal Engine" section. It doesn't take long!! Sounds like a great find.

When I begun my search for a C5 I told everyone that I was looking for higher mileage examples so I would save money. But after 7 weeks of searching and finding nothing in my price range, a low mileage 98 showed up in the Auto Trader that I just couldn't resist. It had only 31,900 miles on it (now it's up to 32,800 in less than two weeks) and I'm so glad I spent the extra $$$ on a low mileage one! The car is in almost showroom condition overall. So it's not just the engine you have to consider, it's the overall car. Sure I spent a few thousand more, but in the end I've got a car that is almost like new, and I'm much happier than I would've been if I had bought a high mileage car just to save a little bit. People that see my car think it's a 2004.

i bought mine with 85k from a woman, she said she got it from an old man in like 2000 so im not very worried. i dont think she was strong enough to hold onto the steering wheel to gas the hell out of it.

Well I found a 99 Formula M6 with 41k on it. It looks awesome from the pics. I am going to call back tomorrow and try to set something up on it.
