Default Can a cam cause damage?

I am looking to get a performance upgrade and was torn between headers and y-pipe or a cam. I went to a local performace shop and was told that hooker headers and ypipe would add 15-20 hp and a cam would be almost 40 hp. So i think i want to go with a cam, but are cams harmful to your car? I dont want anything that could cause serious damage. If anyone could help me out that would be great.

A cam won't be harmful if you make sure that you upgrade the rest of the valvetrain to support it. You'll want hardened pushrods and different valve springs to support a decent cam. Long tube headers would probably be a more logical step since the existing manifolds will choke up a cam.

Do your exhaust first.. then go with a cam. The stock manifolds would kinda negate any gains you would see with a cam swap..

exactly, i put my cam in a few days before my headers, and i couldnt feel much of a seat of the pants gain, but after the lt's, wow. put on a good set of longtubes while you decide what cam you want. youll need the extra time to decide.

just as everyone else who answered, LT's and a Y-pipe first, then a cam....You will choke the living crap out of any cam with stock manifolds..
