Problem with my daily driver

Problem with my daily driver well actually its my fiance's neon. when you crank it, it seems to crank fine but as soon as it does it sounds like it wants to cut off, puttering and such until you give it gas and then its fine again. it does it also sometimes when you are about to come to a stop, it actually died once. any ideas on what this could be? its a 96 neon sport. I had a Caddy do the same thing to me a few years back. Turned out to be a clogged fuel filter. I'd take a look at that first as I made the mistake of looking at everything else first.
