Default Questions on WS6s'...

How can I tell if it's an original WS6 and not just a ram-air add-on?

I currently have a 1995 Caprice (police packege) that has been moded. In the B-body world Impala SS and Caprices -besides the obious paint and cosmetics- are diff in only a few things, including the VIN coding. Some guys try to sell cloned Caprices as Impala SS, but it's easy to spot. Although there is little differences, the name Impala SS makes the car retain a higher value.

Is it the same w/ the WS6? Is WS6 a factory only model, or can "WS6" mods be added to a stock Trans Am and become an "official" WS6. Is there something in the VIN number?

Any additional tips on what to look for would be appreciated, since I'm planning on buying one soon. I'm specifically looking for a 00-02 yr model, Black on Black WS6, M6, w/ T-top (no convertibles). 'Been doing some research and I like what I see so far.

Thanks in advanced!!!

There is nothing in the VIN specfically. You can look on the SPID sticker (on the drivers' door jamb, white sticker with a bunch of 3 character codes) for the "WS6" RPO code. Make sure that the VIN on the top of the sticker matches the car's VIN.

A true WS6 will have the correct rasied lower air box, a power steering cooler, 32mm front sway bar, high polished 17" wheels with GM stamp on the edge, correct 17X9" wheel jounce spacers for the rear tires (this is one that many people forget to change when coverting a non-WS6 car to a WS6), 2.5" rolled edge polished tail pipes (if the exhaust is still stock), and of course the Ram Air hood and WS.6 badge on the rear bumper.

Any of those parts could be swapped in though. Best thing is to check that SPID sheet.

Hope that helps. Good luck in your search.

It has no front (anti)sway bar? That's odd, did you buy it used? Maybe the previous owner removed it for drag racing (allowing more travel to the front suspension and reducing front end weight).

Or did you just mean that it doesn't have the 32mm size bar? The base TAs, Z28s, and Formulas just get a 30mm bar.

PS. If the door sticker says WS6 and the VIN on that sticker matches your cars' VIN, then you most certainly have a WS6 (unless someone forged that sticker).

an official ws6 is usually more expensive then a non-ws6 one. usually a decently amount more expensive..
i know for my 98, the ws6 package was an additional $3100...

What everyone else said about the WS6, but I would suggest the 01-02, not the 00 (which is what I have). 01-02's have the LS6 intake, no EGR, better clutch hydraulics, and better blocker rings in the tranny (so I have heard about the blocker rings anyway).

The reverse should be true of the new WS6s. In 98 yes the ws6 was hard to find, in 02 the ws6 was a dime a dozen and the TA was hard to find...

Huh??? You will not find an equivalent T/A with a blue book value more than an equivalent WS6... regardless of the year. The WS6 is a TransAm (or it could be a Firebird in some years, but most are T/A's) with a $3,000.00-$4,000.00 extra cost option.

This is true, the '02 WS6 T/A was actually more common than a base '02 Trans Am, but the WS6 cars are still worth more in any year.

WS6 Formula was only an option in '98-'00.

You are correct. That's what I paid for mine back in 98.
