Talking Free mods today

Finally got a weekend to play, just finished FRA mod and am going to Lowe's for fernco mod.I plan on porting the MAF if time/wife/baby permits. My question is should I pick up a tb bypass kit from ebay?My car is not driven during cold months, but is it worth it to do this mod?My only other mod I will be doing is a catback in the spring,my budget is very limited.

I understand about the tight budget. Where do you find the free mods? I would probably try the bypass, and see what you think. If its enough of a gain, how it runs. I don't think it would be to bad to reverse.

Definately do the TB Bypass, I've got a kit at my house right now if you want it. I'll just charge you shipping.

i wouldnt touch that MAF, you might be opening up a whole bag of **** for VERY minimal gains, if any. i've heard it doing WIERD things to cars, especially for automatic cars. since you're on a budget (like everyone else in the world, especialy me) i wouldnt mess with it. porting the throttle body is a different story, you can hog that dude out to your hearts desire.....you will actually feel some gains from this. if you wanna get fancy, you can epoxy the holes with some tubes coming thru for the IAC and stuff, then port it. as for the TB bypass, go fer it!

Here's my 2 cents on free mods...

Do:

- TB Bump Stop Mod
- FRA Mod
- !EGR/!AIR
- !Wire Mod (appearance)

Don't:

- Port the MAF (no MAF ends in an A4 without adjusting line pressure - you're tranny will thank me)
- TB Bypass Mod (pointless IMO and a waste of time)
- Timing Tricker

Thanks for the input and offers,as you married family guys know you never have as much time as you need, only had a small amount of "me" time.I did complete the FRA and bought my fernco, now I am rethinking the MAF thing, didn't know it was bad for A/T.This is why this site is the best, thanks for the advice.

I've done !EGR, TB bypass MAF and air tube mod (truck). The only ones I would do again would be TB bypass and EGR. EGR serves no purpose and for me neither does TB coolant (I live in FL). Main reason I did EGR was the gas pedal always stuck and i got tired of cleaning the TB.

Agreed that routing coolant through the TB doesn't do much especially in FL, but neither does removing the coolant flow from it. It's a waste of time mod IMO.

It's basically just a why not thing. I don't need it in FL and it keeps the intake MUCH cooler.

Do you really think so? Have you ever checked IAT's or anything? Just curious.

It's all relative though. If my truck had a supercharger or was fast I wouldn't bother with it either. I'm fixing to buy a house so all my money has to go to that and the free mod's are ever more enticing.

I don't have any hard evidence but, before you couldn't keep your hand on the TB it was very hot I guess 210 or whatever nowno matter how hot the engine gets you can put your hand on the TB no prob. Of course it didn't lower the whole intake down this much but I'm sure it did some.

Good advice. However, a Hooker catback is a great setup and is under $300. Sounds awesome and performs...plus it's very easy to drop at the track if you want to shed a few pounds.

Yeah, stay away from the Flowmaster catback. If you do that catback, and add in an SLP lid you should be in good shape. You can pick up lids pretty cheap sometimes. With those couple things you can have some fun.

Supposedly the stock TB is good until you reach 500 HP. I plan on doing an exhaust, lid, FRA, and smooth bellows. Supposedly the smooth bellows thing is only cosmetic, but why not? I have heard too many stories about problems about the TB thing, so i'll pass for now.

That's true. You would be in much better shape buying a used lid than a smooth bellow.

Thanks again for the advice,I have posted in other threads that Hooker will be the exhaust I will buy once springs gets here, from what I have researched you can't go wrong with price/performance and sound of Hooker.I do have my stock airlid, but I ported it(for newbies- I took a dremel and cut off all the plastic fins and sanded inside the lid).I am going with this for a while, untill a real cheap lid on the classifieds really catches my attention. So I am not porting the MAF,and unsure of tb bypass.I couldn't find any links with instructions for the tb bump stop mod.If anyone has this please post.Again I am grateful for your opinions and knowledge
