Just the engine designation GM gave it. Like the LT1's, LS5 & LS6's of the early 70's. The old 350's in the 70's were called LT1's and GM just reused the name when they came out with the new engine in 92, and I believe there used to be an LS1 back in the old days too...pretty sure it was a pontiac designation. any experts out there?

It doesn't mean anything. It's just a code used by GM for this particular type of engine.

All it is, is GM's 3 digit code for identifying the engin, we could have got stuck with anything, if you look in any manuals that list several cars, they will usually list the engine code by the motor, LS1/LS5/LS6/LS7/LT1/LT-1/L98/LG4. Same with the cars themselves, all our cars are coded, Z28/WS6, they are GM's way of identification, nothing more.

The LS1 code was also used for the 1970 Ram Air IV 400 that was an option on the Trans Am and GTO.
The standard being the Ram Air III 400 V8. <img border="0" title="" alt="[Big Grin]" src="gr_grin.gif" />

LS1 = RPO code. RPO = Regular Production Order
