Default Z06 or C5

I have been pondering this for a while....Is the Zo6 worth the extra money if in the end i am just gonna get mostly all new componets? I will be looking for a fast DD that can take on Vipers and other higher end cars...Just wanna know your $.02

thanks

People will tell you that you can get a cheap C5 and mod it to out perform a Z06. That is true. However, if you do the same mods to an 01 Z then you will still spank that C5. You are starting with a better platform that has more than just power over the C5.

The Z06 has a better engine, so I would go with it.

I believe the choice is up to you. A Z06 is a hardtop only, but it is also like a 100 pounds lighter. If having the targa top is important, go with a C5 coupe. If you get a C5 and you want to make as fast as you sound like you want, it is actually better to go with a 97-98 because of the return fuel system. The Z06's only advantage when you mod them both like you are saying is the LS6 heads and the higher compression. If you get a cam, LS6 intake, ported LS6 heads, etc..., both motors will have the same performance. Also from what I have heard, the LS6 block is a little weaker than the LS1 block for some reason? Its really up to you what you want in the end. Good luck.

The LS6 block is strong and has better breathing capacity than the LS1. You should ask yourself, 1. Do you want a vette for cheap to mod or 2. Do you want the better vette up front and mod as funds allow. I would recommend buying the most car you can up front than going with an earlier version. If anything, start with an 01 C5 since it will have some of the LS6 goodies to begin with. Another thing to consider is the drive train of the ZO6. The six speed tranny has different gear ratios than the standard C5. The difference is equal to putting 3.90 gears in a stock M6 C5. The suspension is a lot better than the C5. The farther back you go the greater these differences become therefore costing you more money to catch up to and try to surpass. Anything can be made to go fast in a straight line. How much more does it cost to turn and stop at those higher speeds?? Depends on how you plan to use this car. As a daily driver, hands down Z06 because it will cost you less over all to get the performance you want. A early model C5 would make a good 1/4mi car since they are relatively cheap leaving you with heads/cam/headers/gear money.

Besides all the great posts above me, IMO Z06 would be the way to go as it's not a clone but a TRUE Z06, this is of course if you even care about whether you have a Z06 or a C5 as they both are fast with the right mods. A couple of cons ($$$), but some VERY perky pro's.

MMmmmm.... Perky.

I never said the LS6 wasnt strong, I just said it wasnt AS strong. I heard this from a buddy of mine that has an LS6 block in his 01 Z28, cant remember why off the top of my head. Also, when you get to a certain point in performance (I am there) the gearing doesnt matter as much. I have no traction until 60-65 if I get on it.. Also, falconskaterjohn said he wants a fast daily driver, not a race car. Either is a great daily driver, but again he have to make up his mind on targa, conv., or hardtop. In the end, there all still Vettes so u cant go wrong.

Yeah, I would look at 2002 and newer. The price differences between the 2001's will not be THAT much to matter.

well i am goin into the army so i was wondering what you guys suggested (wanting to spend 25-30k) would you suggest getting the car once my pay checks start comming in here in june, or would you wait and save up till i am outta the army and then buy one then with paying 100% of it then? do you think the quality of the 02 z06 will stay good while the price goes down? or will it be really hard to find one with low milage?

Z06 for sure. I paid 35,000 for my 02 with 11,000 miles on it. Yellow was a $600 or $800 factory option. Dont remember the exact amount.

A 2002 Z06 with less than 40k can be had for under $29,000 all day here in New England. Even at a dealer. For some reason the 01's are still expensive 28-35K
