Question Normal opperating temp?

well today was the first time i had my car out in warm weater and unfortunately it was not for a fun cruise. I was taking it to body shops to get some repair estimates after my 'incident' with the carquest guy. so anyway here is my question; what should my temp be? it normally is at about 170 but today it went to about 200 neddle centered on guage, and then once i started driving, it went back to about 170. is this normal?

98's are the only year to have a working temp gauge. The reason they went to a "dummy" gauge was b/c people were worried when they saw the temp go up while sitting at a light even though its normal for it to do that.
