Just buy the K&N oil and cleaning kit. Or a paper air filter, either way.

im sure ANY degreaser would be fine, even windex? besides, you need to rinse it all out anyway! and then put oil on it? its only a filter? nothing special!

i have no clue as to how to clean it, i bought it off ebay w/no instructions, i live on a real dusty dirt road an di am wondering if the benefits of the "added HP" (if any) outweigh the lack of a true quality paper filter ie, wix or fram, i have a SLP lid and i wonder how much HP i actually get from teh KN

i was just wanting to do a cheap at home "redneck" clng of my filter w/o having to goto town and buy a spcl oil from KN

I was wondering the same thing.I've bought two cleaning
kits at $10 a piece and I think it's a rip off.

You can clean the k&n with any mild soap/water combo. The oil is to keep the filter from drying out as well as to catch some extra particles of dust. Nonetheless it is a very basic lightweight oil that you are spraying on there. And FYI, use the oil VERY sparingly if you are going to use it, if you use too much it will get through to your MAF and will cause problems such as hesitation.

The oil is to also help with not letting water thru. Just mild soap and water will do the trick with the filter. But be sure to use the oil.

I would just get the kit and go on like they said above dont overdue the oil or wil will cause problems I usually clean it on day and let it dry till the next day then spray the oil on then let it dry another day it even say this in the directions if you put it on while its wet it will mess up the sensors and clog the throttle body whick will SUCK for speed do what I say and you will be fine its a 2 to 3 day process

Just throw the thing away and go buy a paper filter.

I threw away my paper filter to buy a K&N! Are we now saying there's no advantage to the K&N?

if its a gain of only a few HP ( LT 10 or so), i would just as soon stick w/paper, more protection in the long run

If you don't want to go through the hassle of buying the kit then I would say just sell the filter on e-bay and get a paper filter!

It's a VERY minimal gain, if anything.

Its a $10 kit. And it is made for the K&N filter. I have heard of cheap, but damn!

I have both paper, and K&N. There is no seat of the pants feel with it. I use the paper when I am cleaning out the K&N and letting it dry.
