As far as I know most of the GM engine codes are L something, LS1, LT1, L98 and so on. Z28, Z71, Z24 and so on are suspension codes. Dosent G something refer to rearend gears?

Z28 is not a suspension code. It's a Merchandised Package, Special Performance.

Many suspension specific RPO codes start with an "F". Many "Z" codes are for packages that include various performance enhancements including, but not limited to, suspension upgrades. This is also true of many codes starting with "W".

However, while many codes starting with a certain character seem to follow a pattern of belonging to certain segments, this is not always the case.

LS1 is the GM RPO (Regular Production Order) code for a 346ci (5.7L) V8 SEFI gas motor. You will find that code on the SPID (service parts identification) sticker on the driver's door jamb area (along with many other RPOs) of every '98-'02 V8 F-body.

The letters/numbers L-S-1 don't 'stand' for anything themselves, it's just an option code used by GM for both vehicle production purposes and service parts identification. GM has TONS of RPO codes to identify all different options and packages on their cars, and many get reused in later years for different options.

Yeah I'm pretty sure it stands for Lingenfelter Series 1, and I think it was named after him because he was the original designer of the LS1 Gm motor...

RPO codes don't 'stand' for anything other than the package or option assigned to them by GM, they are just a code. Many (probably most) GM motors use codes starting in "L", and they don't stand for Lingenfelter. L67, L36, LC2, LT1, L98, just to name a few popular ones. None of those motors share anything in common with LS1 design, yet they still start in "L". GM is not in the habit of naming all their motors after Lingengelter.

I'm sure LS1 was used in the past by GM, just as LT1, LS6, and LS2 have been as well. If I remember correctly, LS1 and LS2 were Pontiac motor codes decades ago, I think one was for the 455ci Super Duty motor and one was for either a Ram Air IV or V motor. I may be mistaken about the exact motors though.

Not sure if WS7 was ever used by GM, at least not in the recent past. I beleive the 'WS7' you hear people talking about concerning 4th gen Firebirds is something that many people have taken upon themselves to name their non-WS6 cars that have been retro-fitted with WS6 parts after the fact.
