Default Big Cam guys, loss of low end...

If you get all the bolt-ons, and a "big" cam. Will the low end be slower than it was stock? or will the bolt-ons make up some of the low-end the cam lost. Can someone with a somewhat large cam, tell me how much low end the lost after the cam swap?

If your that worried about it, put 3.73 or 4.10 gear in it.

yea you will gain more top end than anything it seems like.. just put a high stall converter in and it flashes ya right to your power band! You'll love the top and pull though.. especially with a stall.. You come outta the hole hard as hell and the converter holds it up from there on out!

I'm just talking about for everyday driving. I don't mind the bucking or anything. I just don't want a major powerless in the lower rpms like 2-3k

Yea, you can counter that loss with a high stall and proper STR. The gears will make a difference too but I think the stall would be better for the money. I'm wanting to go with a T-Rex or equivalent for a winter project so I'm gonna have to step up my converter to around 4000 or higher and then I'll have a lot more in the mid-range and high-end but the higher converter will still keep my torque.

You dont lose low end power. You actually gain some but its shifted further up in the power band. So like others have stated, get gears or converter if a4

I had a trex and I gained everywhere lower, mid, upper.
Of course it really started pulling 4k+
Gears and a converter will help you get into the power band quicker.

I think it's more relative. You have the same or more power down low as stock, it's just that above 3,000 you are pulling 50-100 more hp Therefore, it creates the illusion that you have no low-end.

That would be the definition of losing low end power.

an x3 has less low end than stock. I know because I drive one everyday. my car is slow up until about 2500rpm, then its a bit stronger than stock but by 4k hold the **** on because you are glued in the seat. I used to be able to breaktoque my mt et street radials before my cam, now I can't even break them loose with my linelock.

That would be a more believable statement if you said:
"I had a trex and I gained everywhere lower, mid, upper part of my dyno curve which started at 3000 rpm. "

It would really go against conventional wisdom if you truely meant the lower, middle and upper parts of the entire rpm range.

What supporting mods do you have?

Gears, or bolt-ons?

Don't fool yourself, it is not an illusion.

There have been many, many guys, me included, who have over-cammed their setup and lost lowend. There are ways to try & fix the loss in low rpm cylinder pressure. Jacking up the ignition timing, advancing the cam, raising the static compression with thinner head gaskets, & using variable duration lifters (Rhoads) are some of the things that I did in the past. Actually, the best solution in dealing with the ill effects of too big of a cam would be to change the cam for a smaller one.
