I did gears as a first mod, it was a great day!! But gears combined with a TC was an even better one. Although, gears require tuning unless you don't mind your speedo being off.

Converter is one of (if not the) best first mods you can do on a A4 car.
theres alot of good info about converters at www.converter.cc

3500-3800 stalls are awesome on these cars. Your stock gears should be 3.23 which really isn't that bad. It's a nice gear to have coupled with a stall for a nice balance of performance and highway MPG. I would wait until the ten bolt snaps before I get gears. Then you can order a 12 bolt and check the 3.73 or 4.10 box. Most auto guys go with 3.73's to keep the rpm's in check.
Tranny cooler is a must. Shift kit is optional but highly recommended. Good luck!

I did the converter first to check it's efficency with different gear ratios. I currently have 2.73 gears with a completely stock 98 T/A, other then the converter. This past weekend, and the first time at the track it ran 12.79 - 12.83 - 12.84 with 1.79 for the 60' time. I do have another rear, and if possible I plan on having it installed for this weekend to test at Atco. The spare rear is only a 3.23 but it should give good data. The converter is a prototype design from ProTorque that is made for the guy who wants to drive on the street, keeping the tires reasonably planted, and still run good at the track. It sure seems to have done it's job very well indeed, keep in mind the converter is the ONLY mod to the car, and thru the 98 exhaust manifolds and muffler.
