Just bvought C5 Corvette
I just bought a 2000 corvette, and I had a few questions. I have little experience with the ls1 engine, and corvettes in general. When I accelerate the engine sounds weird, it sounds loud, and you can hear sounds like ticks from the engine. I don't think its anything but like i said i have no experience. There is no degraded driving ability. Its got the air intake, exhaust, and cam package from chevy. It sounded alright to me before but I'm not sure. any help would be appreciated, thanks

i read on a similar post that because of the cams that the engine will always sound like this...they called it piston slap. how warm is the corvette supposed to run? it only warms up to about 140 degrees, and then stays there.

Piston slap should be on cold startup only from what I have read and poses no damage. Since your car has an upgraded camshaft/valvetrain you should get used to the sewing machine sound. If it is a very loud tick from a particular spot you should have it checked out.

exactly, performance cars always have a bit of valvetrain noise.
If your really worried about it, find a local performance shop or another cammed vette and compare the sounds.
I have factory valvetrain in my LS1 and it makes a HEALTHY noise!

Yea s everyone has said if it has a larger camshaft in it and upgraded valvetrain you will hear additional valvestrain noise, sounds kinda like a sewing machine. If it only occurs when you start the car and goes away at it sounds kinda like a diesle engine at first then that would be piston slap. However, if your really concerned just bring it back to the dealership you purchased it (if you bought froma dealer) and ask them what the deal is or have a local performance shop check it out. Welcome good luck though with the vette, its an awesome piece of machinery!

Also try some ams-oil synthetic at maybe a 15-50 oil weight as that has been know to quiet down a noisey engine that has piston slap. If you do a search fro piston slap there are multiple threads on which oil is best for quieting it down and it seems 10w-40 or a 15w-50 oil weight does that fairly well.
