Default ls1 mileage ?

i know that 170k is a lot of miles. but how bad is that really on these motors? i had a third gen before. and a lot of owners on TGO are reports 170+ miles on their cars, and are still running like a champ. but being that these are third gen sbc motors, i though that it may be better than the second gen motors. basically, i found a z28 local, but has 170k on it.

That is a lot of miles but there are some that I know with 140,000mi and still pulling strong. You might get to a point where you will need to replace engine(25,000mi), don't know how well it was maintained, but it would be way to high for me. Of course highway miles are better than city. There are plenty of LS1s with 100,000mi for cheap.

you gotta think too man, even if the Z is a 98, you KNOW that has gotta be a large bulk of highway miles. i mean who the hell drives around that much in town? i bought mine at 116k it's a 99, and an older man owned it before me. i figured, with that many miles being a 99 most were probably highway, and the guy took very good care of the car ( judging by exterior and interior, the paint is flawless ) just use common sense and put 2 and 2 together to see if you can judge how good or how bad the motor has been treated. it worked for me and i'm happy. ( ps yes i do have a wad of cash saved just in case if and when the engine poo's on me, not a bad idea for you either )

so if i could get it for about 5 grand that would be a good deal huh? being that the body and interior are straight, and it runs good.

My brother scored a 98 TA with 170K miles for under $5K...Car was owned by a nurse who traveled tons between cities and took very good care of her car...

Car felt a little on the weak side when we first got it but,we changed out the fuel pump and the thing pulls like a champ now!

My car is at 134K and pulls great!!!But like was said, put 2 and 2 together, you can tell how well a car has been taken care of by appearance, how it drives, listening for odd sounds like bad ticking or any knocking sounds...etc...etc

One of our racers in the Corvette Challenge series just turned 153,000 miles on his 97 (which he bought used) and two weeks ago ran 10.95 and drove home. I think that is a good representation of a high mileage car can run, don't you?

so less than 5k would be a good deal? and what are some things to look for? are there specific things that wear out faster or are common malfunctions etc... other than the driver side seat.

yep good deal i'd go for it, worst case your engine blows you can prob. get a rebuild for 3k ?? that's 8 in the car, with 0 miles.

I would plan on replacing the engine in the time you own the car...so for South of 5k I think it would be a good deal. Then all you have to worry about it that many miles on the Trans.

Have the car inspected and get a compression and leak down test. That will tell you alot about how good the engine is. If the body is straight(check panel gaps), the paint is good, and interior is to your liking, I wouldn't be afraid to drop $5K on a car with those miles. Just get the compression and leak down test.
