Default best 1st mods for an auto?

i am about to get a 98-00 automatic ls1 and want to know what everyone thinks the best 1st mods are. is it smart to put in a stall converter and shift kit in a bone stock car? could that money be better spent elsewhere?

https://ls1tech.com/forums/showthread.php?t=139142 A stall would be good but you can always start out with some of the boltons as well.

Yup go with the stall.I held off on it for two years, not believing the "hype".Then I finally got a tci 3800 and I couldn't believe the difference. It made more of a sotp difference than my nitrous (until I sprayed the 150 shot).Deffinately go with a 3500+stall you won't regret it.

If you can drive the car with a stall.....I vote exhaust, lid, SFC's, and bigger wider rims and tires. Then get a stall...
How hard is it to learn to drive with a stall??

Floor it,if it spins feather it .It's not like learning to drive a stick or anything. At light throttle you can barely tell the differance from stock on my car.But when you step on it it revs up alot faster.Thats the best I can explain it.

In the 1/8 mile track I ran a best of 8.58 with a 2.08 60 ft w/stock converter.I changed out to a tci 3800 and ran a best of 8.12 with a 1.79 60 ft the very next week.Eventually I ran better times as I got used to it but .46 in the 1/8 mile is about .7-.8 in the quarter.Every 10th off your 60 ft time is equal to about 1.5-2ths off your et.Using an 1/8 to 1/4 mile conversion I ran a 13.38 w/stock converter and a 12.66 w/3800 stall. Its hard to find differences like that for the price.

My vote is also for the stall I did all bolt ons and a cam before I did a stall. I wish it would have been the other ways around. Huge difference in the way the car pulls now if i can only get it to hook. before the stall the car went 12.8 im hoping for 12.20s with a sticky tire and a good 60 ft. The stall is a 3200 vig. Hope this helps

First, the two musts are lid and catback. Then I'd say go for subframe connectors. Best bang for the buck is a stall, but some people don't quite want that. If you do, go for a 3200-3500 stall your first time around. Makes a huge difference.

I wouldn't get a catback, cut-outs are way cheaper and practically same performance/sound. but the following are all great mods to do early on:

lid
ported tb
tranny cooler (mandatory if you have a stall)
underdrive pullies
subframe connectors

none of those mods will cost more than $200 a piece. Then you can do stall and LTs + X,H or Y pipe. But thats when stuff starts getting really expensive. At least if you're a highschool student like me.

Don't forget the free mods like porting the throttle body, coolant bypass, ... etc.

Also setting the shift firmess higher and geting a tranny cooler will help with tranmission life.
