about to buy a 32k 2002 Ws6 6-speed, but it's having detonation problems Ok guys i need your help..... im about to buy a 32k 2002 Ws6 6 speed and its almost perfect just ooooooone issue
It was detonating real bad under a load at WOT past about 4200rpm
First, we had just put some gas in it at the BP station (93 of course) and i first noticed it after my first wot blast and freaked out and tryed to figure out just what caused it, and could only come up with the gas we just got (which was 20bux worth) was bad and just making it detonate (it was very audiable), so we went to a chevron and filled her up all the way, did another wot blast and it still did it but MUCH less......
what else could it be besides bad gas, with it being only 32k miles i cant figure out what else would cause it, and if it is bad gas how could make sure of it, and if not what could i do to fix/figure it out before i buy it, the buyer is very willing to help fix it!

its a 100% stock car though......and its only on a good WOT blast in the correct gear, i can punch it in like 5th gear at 40 and it wont, but if im going like 60 in 2nd then it will.....but only past 4k

Might have fuel pump/filter/injector issues, sounds like it's running out of fuel at the higher RPMs
Get a fuel pressure guage and tap into the schrader valve at the end of the fuel rail, tape the guage low on the windshield, and watch what it does when you punch it, I suspect the fuel pump can't keep up with the demand, either due to a clogged fuel filter (easy and cheap fix), or the fuel pump is going out (not easy or cheap to fix) so the pressure should drop (probably quite a bit)
BTW ask him if he's ever run out of gas, that can damage the fuel piump

Do you know for sure that it is detonation?
It could easily be fuel filter like other people have described, or even like a higher rpm miss....
just a thought..
