if you dont take care of it you will lose mileage. your rings will wear and let cylnder pressure out, oil in and reduce your mileage......things wear down and become harder for the engine to turn, your result may not be noticable because of the variables in driving style, locaton and habits.........but if you dont take care of it youll definately lose mileage.

You will inevitably lose a couple MPG, but it shouldn't be anything significant if the vehicle has been properly maintained. Meaning scheduled tune ups, oil changes, fuel system maintainence, ect.
Most of the loss can be attributed to worn out parts, such as extra drag from the transmission, rear, axle parts, ect. Rings and seals in the engine also get worn out, which causes loss of compression and power.
Best thing you can do to minimize the effects of higher mileage is to use Synthetic oil (Mobil 1) throughout the cars lifespan, synthetic transmission and axle gear oil, give it proper tune ups with quality parts, and use Fuel injection/engine cleaner (Techron/Seafoam) to keep the engine and its systems clean.
Hope that helps.
