Get the vin# and take it to the local PD and have them run the vin...Have seen this over and over where the car was stolen...Watch yourself..If the guy is legit then you can get the DMV/MVA to issue a new/replacement title, they may add a new state issued vin#...

Things may be different in your state and it may even be different in my state now but I bought a car back in 1983 without a title and I had a noterized bill of sale and the state DMV said that since the car had not be registered in over 10 years they had no record of the title and could not issue me a title. They said I could take it to the Police Barricks for inspection and if it passed and I applied the correct way for a title they would issue me a reconstructed title but I was not about to spend thousands restoring the car without knowing I could get a title for it. I eventually junked the car for 50 bucks but I had paid 700 for it. I was stupid but was only 16.
Things may be different now. Each state probably handles it differently. I think taking the VIN to your local PD is the best idea to make sure the car was not stolen at some point in it's life. Of course who knows how long the PD keeps those records. Good luck.

The Police will check NCIC which is a national database...There are purge periods, but as long as its not stolen you should be good. Just check with your local DMV for any procedures (read, "hoops") you'll have to go thru to get it done. The bottom line is go with your gut..Do you know the seller? If it looks like a duck....

It's going to depend on the state, some states didn't require titles on cars till the mid 70s (Mass is one) call the DMV and see if your state is one of these
I've bought old mid-late 60s cars with no titles before, and they weren't stolen, just a bill of sale was all I needed (it was no more difficult than registering any other car)
FWIW have the local PD run a check on the VIN (if for nothing other than peace of mind)
