Default cam, rear end, or n20, which one first?

i put this in this section because i know the other sections might be one sided because they are dedicated to certain topics

alrighty, i just sold my other car and i have some cash i want to put into my bird. i have fast toys ram air, lid and full exhaust.

i want to put a cam in my car and spray it, but i know im going to need a rear end to hold it.

now which one would you do first? i want to go with a large cam, but i have a 99 motor so i assume ill need some rod bolts if i want to spin it that high.

i figured if i go with a big cam, i need a gear to keep it in the powerband, but i know if i spray it i dont need such a steep gear.

i dont have money for all three, and i think im leaning on getting a rear end first (9 inch) but im not sure what gear to go with because i know ill need less gear for spray and more gear for a cam.

let me know what you guys would do if you were me

along with a big hearty cam you'll need a good tune.. which is gonna cost you in the ballpark of 500+ on top of the cam itself.. with the options you gave id just go with the rear end (you dont want to start throwing things on and not have the necessary components to back it up) as far as the gears go, do you have a a4 or m6?

on a side note.. have you considered messing around with your intake (maf, tb, ls6/x intake.. you probably have a filter although i didnt see that you listed it) .. just a thought, hope that helped you some..

whoops, my bad, she is a 6 speed.

im leaning towards the rear end first because i figure spray and/or cam will destroy the stocker.

but im not sure which gear to go with if i get a rear end first

when you go with a big cam its a good idea to do some other internal work....so u could hold off on that...sprayn it is ok...but it will ruin a unbuilt motor afterawhile....so id hold off for a bit....and your gonna have to do the rear end sooner or later sooo yea go ahead and do it

lol, i thought 4.10s were going to be to much because i seen another post of people telling a guy to run like 3.73s in his 6 speed with spray.

i should have my clutch in next week (or whenever the hell it gets here) then i think im going to get the rear first (since the other 2 options are just going to break it, then ill really be fucked) then i think ill spray it since it will be a little cheaper than going with a cam right now. im leaning towards the 4.11 (since its a 9 inch) because that seems to be the choice gear for us t56ers.

does my plan sound ok, or anybody got a better idea

if you are POSITIVE you are going cam and spray, i'd get the rear end first. if you do the others first and break the rear, you'll be without a car for weeks til the rear gets built, shipped and put in (months if you get a strange).

if you do go cam and spray first, i wouldn't take it to the track and only run street tires til my rear came in.

Rear end with steep gears, then cam, then nitrous. If you won't be racing you can go cam first.

The stronger rod bolts came out sometime in the '00 model year. I wouldn't spin a '99 above 6500 rpm on a regular basis without new rod bolts.

6 speed? Definitely the 9 inch first. Then I'd go cam before nitrous.

I'd get the rear-end first with a 3.73 gear, possibly 4.10, but I wouldn't mess with a 4.56 if you want to drive it on the street.

i have the money for a rear, i will be getting a 9 inch for sure with probably a 4.10

i rather have the comfort of knowing my rear end can handle a hard launch on drag radials, rather than having it snap to pieces because i wanted to spray the car instead

if i go cam next i want to do it right, which means ill be changing the rod bolts, which i dont think ill do myself. so its going to be quite the price for cam and everything else i need and im sure a shop will charge a pretty penny to change out my rod bolts.

its not like i can just spend 350 bucks on a cam and throw it in and be done with it.

You can go with very steep gears in an M6 and get decent mileage. 4.10 or even 4.33. As somebody else stated you can get away with that since you have two overdrive gears. 0.5:1 sixth gear will make sure you don't run your engine all that high.

With a 4.33 rear gear in an M6 you get 71 mph at 2,000 rpm in 6th.

While having H/C power is awesome, it really bites to not be able to put the power down. I would do the rear first if I was modding my car over again. With your mods and a 9" w 4.10s low 12's are easily done with some sticky tires. Then go for the cam and N20 later on.

Yea, BUT with the stock gearing I can hit 90 mph on the highwat and still be around 1950-2000 rpm's. Thats a BIG difference when youre paying 3+ dollars at the pump .

ya, but who buys an ls1 to get good gas mileage, if you want good gas mileage, get a civic.

the decent gas mileage that these cars get are just a bonus, im willing to loose a little for some performance
