Default Hello ..... need help!

Greatings everyone. I have been a long time lurker and I finally decided to join. The main reason is I am very close to closing a deal on a 2000 SS convertible. I have a few questions. I ran the car fax and it only says z28. How can I tell if its a real SS. The car has a 6spd and leather seats. What can I do to make sure its a real SS. Oh it has 55,000 miles and I can get it for $14,000...do you guys/gals think its a good deal?

Here is the vin # 2G1FP32G5Y2164641 is there a way to decode it so I know its a real SS?

Thanks for the help.

for some models, carfax and other VIN places will pull up an SS as a Z/28 due to the fact the ss is basically a factory modified Z/28 camaro. Basically the same thing between a formula/trans am on the pontiac end. Your best bet would be to probably go straight to GM and have them run the VIN tag to check if it's a real SS or not.

If you're close enough, you could always go look at the RPO codes on the driver's-side door. Or get the owner to take a picture of it. Either way, you're looking for a WU8 code. I'm almost positive that's the code for an SS.

WU8 is the code for the SS package, if the RPO list has that then your lookin at a true SS. if no WU8, someone is tryin to pass a Z28 as an SS

Only way to tell, RPO code as stated above. WU8 is correct for the SS package.

PS. An SS is also still a Z28, just with the WU8 upgrade option. Also might have further SLP upgrades under the Y2Y code.

Be sure to match your door VIN to the one on the windsheild. If they are different, and your door has WU8, then someone swapped the door, obviously.

SLP also knows. They need the last 8 digits of the Vin.

What does the rear spoiler look like? Is it completely straight across, or, does it have a slight curve in the center. Single exhaust, 3", cold air intake, hood scoop? These are identities of a SS (S.L.P.) car. True some SS cars have different options, still this car your looking at could be an SS, look at the obvious.

if it's only a z28, get it anyway, spend a couple hundred dollars, and it can be as fast as an SS!

Wow. I'll just let someone else take over on this one if they want. I don't want to be the one to get the guy's thread deleted for arguing.

I'm not gonna argue... I'm relatively new at this scene...

But isn't the difference, in terms of GM's ratings, 20 hp? feel free to correct me.

Ratings, yes. Actual numbers, not so much. The bottom line is Z28 = SS = Formula = Trans Am, assuming all are stock/modded equally.

The difference is all about marketing.

The only way that an SS is making any more power than a base Z28 is if the SS was equipted with certain SLP Y2Y options: the Blackwing air lid and/or the dual/dual catback. Otherwise, the power difference is indistinguishable; the SS might be making 1-2 more HP due to a marginally better flowing muffler (assuming no dual/dual option).

Even the SS is underrated, just not by as much as the Z28. They all make nearly the same power as a Vette of the same year, about 345-350 at the motor when stock.

Aside from the fact that the Z28 and SS's performance are the same, it would be advantageous for him to prove that it's a Z28 and not an SS (if it is indeed a Z). That would knock at least $2000 off the asking price. Even if the clone was faithful.. no WU8 = no SS.

I have a hard time believing that z28=ss=t/a=ws6=formula

When I got my t/a, my buddy got a 30th ws6 and another friend got a formula of the same year. Mine is a4 and they have m6, and they pulled on me impressively. Maybe they had extra options or maybe m6 is just that much faster when a good driver is behind the wheel?
