Hello ..... need help!
Greatings everyone. I have been a long time lurker and I finally decided to join. The main reason is I am very close to closing a deal on a 2000 SS convertible. I have a few questions. I ran the car fax and it only says z28. How can I tell if its a real SS. The car has a 6spd and leather seats. What can I do to make sure its a real SS. Oh it has 55,000 miles and I can get it for $14,000...do you guys/gals think its a good deal?
Here is the vin # 2G1FP32G5Y2164641 is there a way to decode it so I know its a real SS?
Thanks for the help.

for some models, carfax and other VIN places will pull up an SS as a Z/28 due to the fact the ss is basically a factory modified Z/28 camaro. Basically the same thing between a formula/trans am on the pontiac end. Your best bet would be to probably go straight to GM and have them run the VIN tag to check if it's a real SS or not.

If you're close enough, you could always go look at the RPO codes on the driver's-side door. Or get the owner to take a picture of it. Either way, you're looking for a WU8 code. I'm almost positive that's the code for an SS.

Only way to tell, RPO code as stated above. WU8 is correct for the SS package.
PS. An SS is also still a Z28, just with the WU8 upgrade option. Also might have further SLP upgrades under the Y2Y code.

What does the rear spoiler look like? Is it completely straight across, or, does it have a slight curve in the center. Single exhaust, 3", cold air intake, hood scoop? These are identities of a SS (S.L.P.) car. True some SS cars have different options, still this car your looking at could be an SS, look at the obvious.

The only way that an SS is making any more power than a base Z28 is if the SS was equipted with certain SLP Y2Y options: the Blackwing air lid and/or the dual/dual catback. Otherwise, the power difference is indistinguishable; the SS might be making 1-2 more HP due to a marginally better flowing muffler (assuming no dual/dual option).
Even the SS is underrated, just not by as much as the Z28. They all make nearly the same power as a Vette of the same year, about 345-350 at the motor when stock.

I have a hard time believing that z28=ss=t/a=ws6=formula
When I got my t/a, my buddy got a 30th ws6 and another friend got a formula of the same year. Mine is a4 and they have m6, and they pulled on me impressively. Maybe they had extra options or maybe m6 is just that much faster when a good driver is behind the wheel?
