Default Buying a TA but have a question..

Breif explanation..
96 WS6
56000 miles
BBK headers and exhaust
Automatic
Chip
Etc..
Im getting this for 6,000 and I went last night to pick it up and he said he took it for a drive and now the trans is NOT shifting out of 2nd gear. Has anyone ever heard of this and what could this be. Im still buying it, I am just wondering if this is an issue. I know Im getting a good deal on this, so Im not too worried. I was told it could be electronic..
Any help on this would be greatly appreciated..!
Thanks guys!

I'd bet that the tranny could be toast...if you still buy it make sure that you get a substantial discount because of this.

Automatic transmissions have a "limp home" mode that locks you into 2nd gear when the onboard sensors detect a severe failure within the transmission. This is often a result of wear in the transmission getting to the point where it exceeds allowable tolerances, and the transmission will go into this mode. Quite often, if you leave the car sit overnight the transmission will start up in normal mode, but as it warms up it will transition back into "limp home" mode.

I had this happen on two cars over the years (not trans ams) and in both cases it cost me a new transmission.

You are best to assume the transmission is shot, and make your decision on what to pay and whether or not to buy this car based on having to replace it. Call around and get quotes.

Yea a new tranny isnt cheap, so id say have him drop the full amount, or at least half, off the price...BTW I sold the 98 z28 in my sig, with all the mods listed and only 50K miles (400 miles on the cam and other parts) for 9500 and the tranny was perfect.

Yes, i bought the car and the Tranny was shot.. Worked out good for me, I picked it up for 4K with everything.. I have a new trans being out in as we speak, picking it up tomorrow..
Built it up a bit, with a shift kit.. Only cost me around 500 bucks.. The guy who is doing the work has been one of my clients for years now.. He has been building custom hot rods since the 60's.. He said im just paying for the parts.. Cant wait to pick it up!!
for $4500 I cant beat the deal I got on this car...

Thanks for all of the replies guys! I will post up some poics once I get it..!
