0-60 how do i time myself best?
i have an a4 98 t/a. i dont take her to the track and i dont think i'll ever want to, atleast not right now, but im curiuos to see how fast she hits from 0-60. any tips? like where i should do it? or how do i time myself. i read that 98 stock t/a's go 0-60 in 5.1 secs but when i try it like at the light or pull over at a high way and then stomp it i feel like i get times like mid 6's and low 7's. is there something im not doing right? she's stock a4 by the way. i plan on keeping her stock and im new with all this. just got her a couple days ago. my first real sports car.

When I timed myself in my truck (just to kill time) I took it to a very empty road around here that has a stop sign. I used a video camera, and timed it using the timer on windows media player. It gives you a general idea...

THE driver mod. If you can't drive the car...then you can't get the same times. I've never seen that low of a 0-60 time. You want to learn how to launch the car to get a lower 0-60 time though. Why not jsut bring it to the track? Your beating on it anyway.

good advice on the thorough tune up. i will do that in the next couple of days. your right to about the driver. im no where near a real driver. all i do is keep her on D and accelerate. thats about it. but im thinking if they said 0-60 in 5.1 secs at the catalogue shouldnt it do that for a normal driver like me? and perhaps better lower timing for experienced drivers like you guys? i dont beat on her i love this thing. i just do the occasional testings for satisfactory purposes. shes my only car. cant wait for my girlfriend to get a car so we can use that as our main car and just use mine on nice, show offy need for speed days. anyways i appreciate all these replies dudes, keep em coming.
thanks
thanks

right. i guess i'm just acting like a mother with a new born. my main concern for this car is i wanna get to 0-60 in 5.1 secs w/o mods and w/0 having to shift and raise rpms at a stop like the catalogues say.

There are so many varibles, elevation, road surface, tires, driver...ect. Regardless of that..you will never get a good launch without actually launch..it is so much more than just hitting the gas.

0-60 times don't tell much about a car other than how much traction you have from a standing stop. They're really only a useful piece of information when you're arguing with idiots who hold Motor Trend as their bible. You should be more concerned with your 1/4 mile times.

i did mine with a cell phone video camera, i just pointed it at the dash where i could see the MPH. i hit record and punched it the phone only records for 5 sec. so i watched the video to see where i was at and the speedo showed 65mph in 5 sec. so i figured maybe 4.6-4.9 0-60mph thats on drag radials with true duals. everything else stock and its an A4 with stock TC.

Call me stupid but here it is, wouldnt a 2.73 geared car accelerate slower to 60 than the gu5 option with the 3.23's?? So different cars will do different times!! And then the m6 has the 3.42's so that should do a little better than either auto. Of couse only if you can drive to. When I had my 3.23 geared z28 it would do about high 5's to 60 with bald tires!!

ANY stopwatches will blow. I doubt it has much to do with driver mod, atleast to be over 2 seconds slower. Take it to the track, as someone has said 0-60 times don't tell you much.

Like has been said too many variables to get an accurate 0-60 time. Even with the 5.1 figures you could see times from 3 to 6 seconds to 60 with different cars, drivers, and environments. Traction and driver are the biggest factors though.
