Default oil pressure Q's

i have notice that the oil pressure on my care will some times fluctuate from 40psi to 30psi. it doesnt do it all the time but i have noticed it severaltimes. For example earlier tonight i sat in the parking lot for 10+ minutes withthe car on [D] and it began to do it. it only does it while im at a stop , not while the car is running. and as soon as i give it gas it goes back up to 40psi. I've checked the oil and its full. any i deas as to why it maybe doind this?? and should i worry about it??

it neeps more pressure to lubricate things when your engine is above idle, than when it is not a idle if you sit at a stop sign or, youll see the pressure go down, if you rev the engine itll shoot up.... all cars do it, even the cars in my sig did it... nothing to worry about,... but mine at idle is around 35psi and when im moving its over 40psi, id say around 50psi. i guess ever car is different

it normal, stock gauges are not that great.Mine does the same thing since new.My oil gauge also does a funky thing where if i'm cruising @60 mph light throttle and let off the gas it rises from 50 to 60,if i get back on the gas it goes back down to 50 very weird if you ask me.Others have noticed the same thing in their cars.

just going to throw something at you to cover all points of interest....

my motor had 67k miles on it...99...oil psi road between 28-38 at idle....40-60 at speed....car road fine, but i found some traces of metal...very small...but i dropped the pan and found more....#6 and 8 bearings had spun, due to a failing oil pump....new motor time, luckily the 99 motor was under warranty...so i got paid to rebuild my motor....now i have a 01 motor, new pump and 8k on the motor...runs 40psi at idle ALWAYS...and between 60-65 at speed.....decisions are a bitch

if you see any metal in the oil then no matter what the oil pressure reading you have trouble.Thats why its important to always take a used car before you buy it and check it over closely.

The fluctuating oil pressure gauge you are worried about is nothing<fergit about it>

did your car make anoise when you spun the bearings??? i ask this , beacuse all the cars that i have heard of (spun bearing) have always made a weird noise and run like ****....last time i changed the oil , i asked the guy who did it , to tell me if he found any type of metal on the magnetic plug..he said no.......

From what I read, the 98 is the only one with accurate gauges. My car in drive at a stop will read between 25-30 psi at 185 degrees.

not exactly...it didnt run "strong" but by no means ran weak....it did make a slight sound almost like a humming or hollow thump like a piston slap....

mine runs at 50-60psi cold, 40psi driving, and 22psi idling at 1000 and on idle the needle wiggles.

according to the repair manual the minimum oil pressure requirements for the LT1 motor is indeed

6 psi at 1000 rpm
18 psi at 2000 rpm
26 psi at 4000 rpm

if i remember right i dont think the requirements for the ls1 were too terribly much different
