Default Differential fluid 4th gen TA

My 99 TA is approaching 13,000 miles. I was looking through my owners manual last time I changed the oil and saw that they recommend changing the diff fluid at 5000 miles! I haven't looked but is there a drain plug so I don't have to remove the cover? I really don't want to pay the dealer or someone else to do this. Why is this recommended? Is it some sort of "break in" fluid from the factory? Thx.

13K on a '99, not bad. Same mileage as my '98

I changed the diff fluid in my '98 at 11K miles. I think it recommended it at 7500. You have to pull the cover off to drain it, then there's a fill plug on the passenger side (near top) of the diff.

Invest in a T/A rear cover as well, then next time you can just take the drain plug out to drain the gear lube. I'm sure they recommend changing the fluid after 5000 miles due to miniscule metal shavings floating around from the gear break in period. When you change it out, fill it with Royal Purple Synthetic lube.

Agree on the T/A or Mac cover, disagree on the RP in his axle. '99s had Auburns, synthetics are a in those diffs!! Use a good mineral based gear oil.

www.ls1tech.com/forums/showpost.php?p=1740885 Wasn't sure exactly what year they changed, that's why I asked. Didn't SLP have a special Auburn option on some years?

Take off the cover, drain the fluid and wipe out the bottom with a clean rag. Clean the magnet off and clean the old gasket material off. Use some silicone and put a bead on the cover, going around all the bolt holes as well. Put it back on, pull the fill plug, and put some good ole Valvoline 80-90 gear lube in there with a bottle of the limited slip additive.

Note, it is ALOT easier to spend a small amount of money for a pump to fill the rear back up with. It's a pain to try and squeeze the bottle and fill it (been there done that ) It takes a little less than 2 quarts to fill it.

Yeah, I think the SSs and Hawks (not sure of the years) had the Auburn Pro available as an option.

My '98 had an auburn, but I believe from '99 up they had torsens. I blew my auburn up though, so now I have a torsen until I get a new axle.
