Basically you've got it figured out.

For the LS1 years:

GU2 = 2.73 gears and steel driveshaft
GU5 = 3.23 gears and aluminum driveshaft

Not at all.

The only issue I can think of is with the aluminum driveshafts on the 3.23 cars. They’re prone to making a “tink” type of noise when shifting into gear. I’ve had two GU5 LS1 cars and they both made this sound.

The steel driveshaft GU2 cars will not make that noise.

Really? I know some LT1 cars had this issue with the steel shaft, but I thought it was resolved by the LS1 years.

Mine doesn't have any such vibration. Been up to 120-130mph a couple times with this car, no vibration at all at any speed. I'm very happy with my "tink"-free steel shaft.

What speed does yours vibrate at? Are you sure it's not tire/wheel related?

i just get a slight vibration through the gas pedal. i'm also getting a horrible rattle in reverse, but i think one of my exhaust clamps broke/is loose.

i also get this horrible rattling from what feels like my console at about 50 mph exactly ONLY when my car is locked up in overdrive...but it seems to only happen when it rains, and not all the time. i don't know what the hell is up with that?

Is this the case at any speed?

That's an odd one. Just an idea,.... are you using a stock trans mount, or a poly one? Poly will vibrate a lot.

If you still have a stock mount, have you checked it for any cracks/damage?

Also, might not hurt to get your wheels/tires rebalanced if it's been a while.

Maybe your driveshaft needs to be rebalanced.

I would try all that stuff before spending the money for a new driveshaft. All I can tell you for sure is that my 2.73/steel shaft car doesn't have any of the issues you've described....

low speed, such as sitting in park, then putting it into drive in a parking lot and slowly taking off. once i get moving it isn't really evident. however, the exhaust clamp rattles like an SOB at these low speeds

AFAIK, it's stock. i never touched them anyway.

i've been meaning to put my car up on ramps for about a month now to see if i can tighten my exhaust clamps, and i wanted to check the mount, too. i really need to get this car on a lift and look it all over, but i don't have a way of doing it without inconveniencing people.

i strongly doubt it's that. the tires have ~10k on them and are practically brand new, along with the rims themselves.

i was thinking that or new u-joints.

i was thinking the same thing, but if i was gonna pay $100 or something to get all new u-joints and get it rebalanced, i may as well get a beefier one. i'm just the kind of guy that hates spending money to see no beneficial increase

i really need to get this car up in the air
