What does it mean when this light comes on?

Basically means the car isn't recognizing the pelet in the key. First thing I'd try is cleaning the key or trying a spare if you have one. PasskeyII/VATS issue if that doesn't work.

Can you reset it by turning the key to the on position, then holding both lock and unlock buttons together until the lights flash and then stop. Will that work?

+1 this is correct.

I don't think you can do that combination, that sounds like something to do with the factory alarm or something. From what I hear the only way to correct the security light coming on is to get a new set of tumblers/key made...

Damn, I guess I will have to find and use my spare key. Hopefully that works. Keys for our cars are not cheap either. Like $70.00-$100.00 dollars I think.

This almost sounds like just resynchronization of the the remote. With ignition off, pressing the lock and unlock buttons simultaneously for a few seconds cycles the door locks and flashes the parking lights. Try cleaning the key/find your spare first. Other options if the lock cyl or key is bad are having it turned off with tuning, or bypassing the pelet with a resistor of the same value. Here's a basic VATS explanation on an earlier model - same principle. http://shbox.com/1/vats_bypass.jpg

No they have a little micro chip on them. If you could make the same micro chip key for the price you would be making some money.

well we have a programmer also. ill check next time i go in, which may be tonight, but are the keys the same for all years? my friend has an 02 with the transponder or whatever its called, the plack plastic peice with a like wire on the middle of it. does this mean you cannot hook up remote start to these cars? o9r is that what the vats bypass is for?
