Default what are the differences...

between an aluminum short block and aluminum long block? why is the long block more expensive?

short block = just the block and pistons, rods, crank shaft ect. Long block is the block and all with heads assembled and what not almost ready to plug and play. More parts assembled = more money.

long block comes assembled vs the short block your dont get heads, cam, valves etc. short block is just crank, rods, pistons and i think all bearings

short block is just the lower rotating assembly(Crank , block, pistons, etc.)

Long block is the whole thing just missing an intake..i think you need to add your own oil pan too.

don't short blocks come with the cam as well?

No cam with the shortblock you wouldn't want to buy a cam and head seperatly any how since you want to match them up. Go to http://www.ls1speed.com/enginepackages.cfm and check out the differences I think that with the long block all you need is electical wireing, pcm, intake, oil pan and few others to get running.
