Default Steering Column Locked? 98TA

Car that i bought a couple of months ago, my younger brother managed to lose the key so i had another one made from the VIN last week. In the time since it had last run the battery had died so i had to charge it.

Anyway the steering column seems to be locked and the key wont turn in the ignition although it seems to fit fine.

Thanks for any help,
Rob

Its a feature.
Turn the wheel left and/or right and turn the key.

I always lock my steering wheel when I remove the key.
Remove the key, then turn the wheel a bit and let go. It will lock.

We figured out that the drivers side door lock and the ignition cylinder (the thing you put the key in and turn on the steering column, not sure if this is the right term for it) have been changed so obviously the car was broken in to at some point.

Now the problem is what to do?

It cant be moved because i cant get the steering to unlock and i dont know the VIN of the new ignition piece to have a key cut.

Any Suggestions?

Thanks,
Rob

If the lock cylinders aren't the original and you don't know their grind, either get them re-keyed or replace them with new ones.

Get the driver's side door re-keyed to match the passenger door, hatch, and t-top panels. If you can't get the cylinders re-keyed and have to replace them, don't forget to replace those other ones as well so everything matches.
