Default New Car maybe....

yes so i was doing some figureing, and im wanting/needing a new car, and ive always loved the 1998-2002 Camaro/Trans Ams. I can afford up to a '99 T/A or Z (insurance wise) i was going to go with an LT1 cuz they were a little bit less expensive, but i was looking online, and i can pick up a 99 T/A for like 8500 bucks, 80,000 miles, 6speed, stock. Is this about right to you? i live in indiana. i was jsut wondering if i should spend the extra 2 grand and get an LS1 over the LT1.... i kno mods are more expensive, but ill probably keep it stock except for like gears, exhaust, and intake...but what do you guys think. and are the 98's jsut as good/fast whatever as the 99-2002's? thanks for all the help.

Like they say an LS1 is an LS1, they will all perform about the same. There are a some differences between years which can be found here: https://ls1tech.com/forums/new-ls1-owners-newbie-tech/213148-jrp-s-faq-commonly-asked-questions.html
And yes I would spend the extra money for the LS1 over the LT1

does 8500 sound like a good/average/reasonable price for a 98/99 T/A, Formula, Z28? and should i et a 98 or 99 LS1 or does it even matter, jsut as longas i have an ls1? lol

Check kbb.com to estimate blue book price. Sounds about right though...

Yes spend the extra on ls1, you'll be glad you did. Mod wise they have a much better price to performance ratio.

98s are considered the bastard childs of ls1s lol. There's nothing inherently "wrong" with them, they just use some different parts than other ls1 years. Such as perimeter vs center bolt valve covers, etc. I had a 98 (as do tons of people on this site) and was very happy with it.

alright kool, i didnt think there would be any problems, but it doesnt hurt to kno , also, im coming from an automatic 92 rs w/ 305, im wondering how happy ill be a 98 is just a little cheaper on insurance than a 99, but, i think id have a better chance for getting the 98 or 99 financed rather than an older LT1... lookin to spend about 420 /month for both car and insurance. hopefully thats reasonable. im turning 20 in august, and my last credit card will be paid of very soon. and i have no blurps on my credit history over the past year or so, (as long as ive had my Credit Card..) but im thinkin a dealership will work with me but yea, ls1 = amazing? haha

yeah that is a good price for sure(as long as cond wise its clean and its mech sound). And the diff between your 305/auto to a LS1/6 spd will def put a smile on your face each time you start her up, let alone rip thru the gears!

Insurance will be basically identicle for a Trans Am or a WS6 Trans Am of the same year. The book value difference isn't enough to warrant any significant increase in rates for the WS6 option.

Insurance doesnt count anything different.. Z28 and SS are they same on insurance... same with T/A and WS6... I have heard bad things with LT1's..

well then ill get an SS/WS6 if i can find one for 9 grand or less, which i doubt, so ill probably try to find just a normal T/A like a 98, then just buy the WS6 hood. ive seen those year of T/A's going for like 9200, 8800, 85000-95000 miles, you can always talk someone down when you ahve cash in your hand, or, tell the dealer youll drive away today if he'll get ya financed haha. i jsut gotta get thsi stupid credit card payed off......kno a way to make a quick 500 bucks? haha

Just keep looking, I bought both of my LS1 f-bods way under book value, right now is the time since they are "out of season". Get the LS1, you'll be glad you got it.

haha! nice! Who doesnt pretend to be slamming gears every now and then!? but yeah, a bullit mustang, performance wise, is not going to be anything to worry about with an LS1. C5's, I dont want to say too much on that, but a 6 sp ws.6 would hang with an auto C5....
