Default In 2009 I'll be able to get antique plates...

Will having the stock 305 motor in it increase the value? Or does the motor type really matter (obviously condition does)? I'm completely confused by the whole "classic car" thing. Any help?

1985 Camaro IROC-Z
5.0L 305 V8

A 1985 camaro is not a classic by any means...

it's an IROC, so i disagree, i think it will be. you think in 1980 they thought the 69 Z28 would have the rep it does now. but i vote for throwing an LS7 or a stroked LSx in that bitch and just keeping the 305 on a stand in the corner of the garage for future whatever.

It's the first year of the IROC-Z. I consider that a classic.

If the car were to become a classic eventually, then having the original motor will certainly increase value.

At this time though, nobody is paying big money for '85 Camaros. So far the only 3rd gens that are commanding any real money are the '89 Turbo Trans Ams and the '91-'92 Firehawks. I imagine that a 15th Ann '84 Trans Am might bring some decent money in mint condition as well, or a mint '92 Heritage Edition Camaro.

The thing is, will people in 20 years be willing to shell out big dollars for a 3rd gen Camaro? I highly doubt it. There are a lot of muscle cars out there that people don't give 2 hoots about, then there are the Cudas, Camaros, and Mustangs.

Well I'm not trying to get $50,000 out of it, I'm just curious as to whether stock is better than modified when it comes to classic car value (& if so, how much?). I bought the car for $3550, & have had offers from strangers who see it in the parking lot for up to $9000. If I got $9000 out of it, I'd be a happy camper.

When it comes to collector cars, 99% of the time, a stock classic will bring more money than a modded classic.

i agree with this dude. and if by some chance they do start going for 50 grand, throw that 305 back in and go get yourself some $.

Keep in mind, make it all original. A price drop that a lot of people do is repainting it. It isn't all original if has been repainted. Just keep it in good shape, and if the numbers are low enough, hey, you may have a nice investment.

Which means you can never drive the car EVER. As soon as you drive down the street there's going to be a rock chip or a bird shitting on it at one point or another. All of those guys on barrett jackson have repainted cars, and then keep them covered in a heated garage and never drive them, just so they can show their toys to the world on tv to make some money.

If you want $9000 out of it and you were offered $9000...

Well that was years ago. I wouldn't even know where to find the guy that offered me $9000 for it. I'm hoping I can hit over $10k, though.... but I really have no idea what kind of offers I might get.

not with a 305. nobody wants a 305. it's not like the classics. hell nobody wants a I6 '69 camaro. they want a v8 powered one. same thing here, hopped up 350, or a better engine swap will be whats wanted.

in wisconsin here it's 20 years for "collector" plates. My dad has collector plates on his '86 IROC. He's ditching the TPI 305 for a 4th gen LT1.

seeing that it came w/ an LS1 motor, I would think so. esp. if we repeat the 70's and hp comes crashing back down.

150,000?

With that sort of mileage, no collector will have any interest unless it first receives a major restoration.
