I unbolted my ipipe from the stock headers... but i heard i can blow a valve.

Is this true... everything on the car is stock but i still have both my cats... will anthing blow or stop working with the headers unbolted frmo the Ipipie

You are going to have to explain a bit more.

The stock exhaust manifolds are pretty short and end about 6-8" down before leading into a pipe then the CAT then the Y merge collector and the I pipe.

So what exactly have you done??

It is not advisable to run no exhaust, 1st it removes harmful gases away from the interior of the car but it also is there for emissions/noise control.

The latter of which may be less important, but you won't see much gains doing what you've done.

If you want louder, get a catback. If you want more performance buy LT headers and a decent Y pipe combined with a good catback exhaust.

i just unbolted it... it is just running headers.. should i just put it back to stock or just run a different pipe so it wont cookj the tranny... it still runs through the cats... and thats all we did... it just runs off the block to cats then stock headers... and the no more muffler... or would tehre be a smarter place to unbolt it?

I am still thoroughly confused about what you’ve actually done.

Did you disconnect the exhaust system at the 3-bolt flange that connects the cat pipes to the manifolds on both sides? Or did you just disconnect the I-pipe from the Y-pipe? You say you're "just running stock headers", but then you say you're still running cats. That is not possibile. Either it's headers with no cats, or it's headers with cats.

If all you did was release the band clamp for the Y-pipe to I-pipe merge, and are now dumping the exhaust right at the end of the Y-pipe, then you are not going to hurt a thing (other than maybe your hearing).

I had just straight headers for like 2 days and nothing happens, not even to my O2 sensors.


The only thing that can possibly happen is you burning your valves up due to a lack of back pressure.


If its a temporary thing, get it fixed.

Or just buy an e cut out.

Lack of back pressure wouldn't have any effects on the valves. Temp change would be the culprit....possibile valve warpage due to sudden and drastic temp change associated with insufficent piping after the valves. In other words, not enough pipe to keep cool, outside air from making it's way upstream and cooling the valves too quickly after shutting the engine down.

But I'm still not sure about exactly what he disconnected....? He said...

...but the I-pipe does not bolt to the stock manifolds/headers.

we took off the y pipe... sorry i had to look but it runs with cats... buddy says valves will go other said no becasue the cats give the back pressure

your not explaining what exact exhaust setup you have, its like a guessing game for us to try and help you.

What did you take off exactly and do you have headers, manifolds, shorty's, mids, LTs??


My I PIPE(after the Y PIPE merge) is not bolted up(just hanging) and its the same as having a cutout thats stuck open. No Big deal.

Yes all we did wasunboltthe Y pipe... but left the ipipe still connected.

I have a SLP Dual Dual exhaust syste,... If this helps... But all we did was take off the Y pipe....

The I pipe and themuffler is jsut hanging there... just to give the impression.. It is liek a permanent cutout...

Should i leave the Y pipe connected and unbolt the Ipipe or just unbolt the Y pipe?

As of now the Y Pipe is not on the car...

bolt the y pipe back up and you could prob get away with the I pipe being unbolted.

Just hope a nasty pothole doesnt rip your exhaust off.

What exactly are you trying to accomplish? It sounds like you took out the middle section between the headers and the muffler. I would put the y pipe back on and take everything from there back off if i correctly understand what youre trying to do. that way the muffler isnt just sitting there adding weight since its not connected to anything.

It will be just like running with an open cutout then

wtf would you do that,the stock manifolds are long enough to keep it from doing any head/valve damage.however the gases are gonna create really hot tranny temps,and leave black **** on everything under the car.me personaly i wouldnt drive any more than a couple miles this way.what is your reason for removing the y?if its to make it louder thats crasy.buy some lts and a couple bullets and turndowns

We put back the Y-pipe and just unbolted everything else... The reason is because i had to choose... Breaks or Cutout...

But as of now it is jsut running with an Y-pipe. The I pipe is off... and from reading.. it doesnt seem like it will cause harm besides all the black crap it will leave behind.

Correct me if i am wrong but will this cause any harm to anything?

The open Y-pipe will be fine. However, I would recommed putting a turndown on the Y-pipe where it used to connect to the I-pipe, just to vent the gases and soot to the ground.
