98 dumby temp gauge question
is the dumby part of the gauge the sender or the actual gauge in the cluster, My trans am has been having temp issues since i swapped my old broken cluster for a different one and I just kinda put 2 and 2 together. if i am using a 99+ cluster in a 98, will it toss the gauge off? reason i ask is it never ran hot but it seems to run about 230 or so with the new cluster. its got about 500 miles or so on it since so i dont know if it started exactly once i swapped it, but i thought id ask

It's my understanding gauge temp is read from ECT>PCM>gauge on the 99+. 98 ECT (and possibly tuning/cluster?) is different, 2 wire vs 3 wire. Don't know if that's the difference or not. Just my thoughts...

The coolant temp sensor is different from a '98 to a '99+ car. The PCM is different as well, so there may be multiple obsticles towards making a '99+ cluster work like the '98 one.

nah... it's very simple... once you remove the plastic lens... the cluster cracks open in half and careful remove the lcd and attached board and transfer it over to the new cluster... mind up i did this with 2... 1998 clusters.... i dont have any experience with 99+ clusters

Im pretty sure that its only the cluster thats the dummy part. I say this because I have a aeroforce gauge for a pod and when you set it to the coolant temp setting and plug it into the obd port it reads exact numbers.

well, I finally got my cars running warm issue straightend out...apparently the thermostat was stuck only partially open, which would keep it cold initially, then prevent it from cooling down later on. I popped in a 160 degree thermostat and it stays between the first and second lines now
