Q's on 98 f-body
hey everyone i just had a question on the '98 f-bodies. i am currently selling my 01 ws6 in favor of buying a cheaper high milage car that i can afford to build. i really want to stay below 10 grand. but that puts me in the range of really high milage '99s and decent mileage '98s. i plan to put a vortec or ati kit on the new car but i've read that the '98s are tougher to tune becuase of the computers. should this be a real concern or are the '98s ok to look at.
thanks in advance for the help.

I bought my 99 w/86K on it for $9K two years ago. I didn't want a 98 mainly because of the (IMO) partially irrational stigma against them and for the reason you described. I'd go with a 99 for sure. Mine now has 109 on it and no problems ever. Taken it on a trip to florida from IL last year and will again this year. Drive it everywhere.

The 98's can absolutely be tuned for big power applications (there's lots of big hp 98's here), but it's nowhere near as easy as tuning a 99+. If it were me, I'd go for a '99.....that will give you access to custom operating systems and all the cool little "make your life easier" tuning features that us poor bastard child 98's will never have access to. /rant

Like I said earlier, 98's can be tuned just as well as a 99+.....the difference is it will take muuuuuch longer to do on a 98. You don't get the neat little tools (in HPT for ex.) like AutoTune and Real Time Tuning that the 99+ guys get.....these tools cut tuning time to a fraction of what it takes to do it all manually. There's also several 2bar and 3bar custom operating systems, both MAF & SD, available for 99+ that the 98 guys don't get.....so keep that in mind if big boost is in your future.
Having a 98 myself, my $.02 is if you want to do the tuning yourself and get it dialed in exactly to your liking (or might want big boost in the future), buy a 99+ and reap the benefits of all the cool little tuning features. If you're going to pay a pro to tune it, buy a 98 and let your tuner worry about it.

oic so it is really reguardless to the person tuning the car. but if i were doing it myself it would be a PITA. thanks that helped a ton. Also i really don't see a ton of boost in the future as i have no intention of pulling the motor.
