Fastest smog legal setup
what's a good smog legal setup (california) for an m6 ls1? I don't mean visual inspection just the sniffer, because all the smog shops I've been to are real lazy and just take a 2 second peak underneath the car to make sure cats are installed. so long tubes
might be ok, don't know if they would pass the sniffer test
Anyways about how much rwhp would that setup be and a rough estimate of 1/4 mile time?

As far as I know there is no magnacharger kit for LS1 f-bodies, I've seen some one offs, and know there's been talk, but I have not seen anything yet. Such a kit would also need a CARB# to be legal here as well.
Thuner Racing's CheaTR cam is smog legal, as is STS rear mounted turbo system. Some folks run a 224/224 cam and pass, but that seems to be the biggest. Vortech and ATI make smog legal superchargers. AFR has CARB legal heads, not sure about other manufacturers.
Long tubes are illegal as they remove or relocate the catalytic convertors. I imagine you could pass if you run a catted Y-pipe and don't have to large a cam, but you would potentially fail visual inspection.
A good heads/cam setup could net you around 400RWHP and still be smogable. Take a look here at one of the site moderators CheaTR cam setup: http://guerragroup.com/CheaTR.htm
Do a search on the site for more info on the power from the STS and supercharger setups.

Late Model Performance does have an FBody Magnacharger kit. I haven't read that the CheaTR cam is CARB approved but AFR 205 heads are. And last I read STS has yet to actually get a CARB # they just claim it is supposed to blanket for GM motors because their truck kit has one. (?) Magnacharger for C5s are CARB as far as I know but technically not for an Fbody. So I think that only leaves the Procharger for a blower.

Good info. I just did a search myself on the magnacharger as its something I've been looking at for awhile.
The CheaTR cam may not have a carb # but it is so inconspicous that no one will know the car isn't stock. The 224's are a little more questionable, but still should not pose a significant problem at the average gas station smog.
I didn't know that about the STS, sounds like some more research would be wise if that's the way the original poster elects to go.
The ATI procharger is definetly a solid choice.

reviving thread...
I guess you could just buy a better rear end and some slicks or DRs and then it would still be smog legal.
This is actually something ive been thinking about. I have been trying to pass california smog for... well... my tags say March 2009 on them, so for a while now. I cant pass because my monitors wont come on, because i tuned it with HPtuners. I tried tuning it back, and even having Nick Newtech try to work his magic on it. Now it still wont passs. The reason i say this is because if you do a cam or turbo you really need to tune it.
Anyway, i was just bringing this thread up to state that, and to see what the fastest someone has had a california smog legal setup to
