ultra noob question on car start up.
okay so i hear some of you guys starting your cars and waiting 5 mins before driving. my question is: is that good for your car? does it cause engine wear? whats the point of this? and when is it appropriate to have to wait 5 mins? (cold day etc.?) thanks so much. new and extra cautious ls1 owner here...

You always want to give your car a little time regardless what it is to cycle, Think trying to get water out of a water bottle that was frozen over night. It doesnt work untill warmed up a little. As for an ls1, i always let it sit for 5 min or more (depending on the temp) to advoid piston slap.

i see. thank you. for some reason i feel like it's bad for the car to just sit there running for a whole 5 minutes... just me though. i'm sure its the right thing to do though. but i just feel like its unhealthy for the car... so at what exact operating temp is okay for me to drive away? 190? lately i just wait 1minute and it hits 160-165

5 minutes?
I would say it depends on the temperature outside. I usually just watch the water temp gauge and when it starts to move then your more than safe. I feel all this will just make your engine run trouble free longer.

I wait a total of about 10 seconds!
Heating up the engine still doesnt heat up the tranny or the rear end thats why I just take it easy until my oil is up to temp

okay guys, so i started warming her up in the morning for five minutes. and the temp ends up at 173. it never ever seems to go to the 185 mark (mark/line between 160 and 210) is that okay? can i drive her past 2500 rpm at a temp of 173? it hardly moves higher than 173. my car is a 98 bonestock t/a.
sorry for the long info, but i have one more question: so when i start her up and wait the whole 5 minute thing, do i do that only when i start her up for the day? or everytime i start her up? thanks so much guys

Don't drive the car above 2500 rpms untill it is fully warmed would be my advice.
