Default Gremlins in my electrical system

I have a problem. When I start up my car, all of my gauges (tach, oil, temp, all that) flick back and forth like 3 times then settle to where theyre supposed to be. I just replaced the starter today, and got the alternator and battery tested which both showed up perfectly fine. Whats going on? If anyone can help Id appreciate it!

You didn't have any reprograming done lately? I only ask because the new Corvettes have this gauge sweep feature like you are describing at start up.

Is your car a '99?

There is a TSB on the '99 gage cluster having this issue. You should be able to find more info on that with a search, I've seen many threads about it over the years.

Might be able to get the TSB info from your local dealer as well.

It is a 99. I just got an aftermarket radio installed in the car. It didnt start doing any of this until I got the radio put in. But I dont know how that could affect the car starting properly. And whats a TSB?

TSB = Technical Service Bulletin

It advises GM dealers and repair techs of a known issue and recommended steps to repair it. It's not a recall, but rather a service advisory for a common problem.

I am having this problem all the sudden, i fixed it(so far)

The ground wasnt on behind the driver side head.

There is a ground for the injector harness' on each head make sure they are on nice and snug and have no "lost" wires.

Basically check your grounds, or it is your battery not holding a load like it suppose to. If you search you wont find many threads about it but there are like 3-4 of them.

I have already checked my battery though and supposedly its fine. Although last night when I tried starting the car after they replaced the starter it started clicking on start up. I checked some TSB's online. I came up with one posting On an electrical wiring harness for the gauges, but I would have to pay another 15 bucks to see the whole thing.

that sucks dont pay it. I would just get some gauges out of a wrecked 02'.

Mileage will be off but you can just remember your old mileage and recalibrate it one day, its not a big deal.

Seriously check your grounds, especially the ones on the back of the heads.

I had the exact problem when I put my system in(have stuff for sale)Came down to a bad pos. connection on my battery. The electronics failed on me about 2 mos. ago while I was on the interstate. Everything went dead except the engine until I turned it off. Had to re-do my pos. lead on my battery. A simple fix and now I have zero problems!! I also highly recommend an aftermarket batt. post, that screws into your pos. terminal. Costs like$1.50 from NAPA. It works great if you're running an audio system, or any other extras (ie toggle switch fans, alarms, etc.)

Good info

Also make sure you get atleast 690 CCA battery.

Autozone has a 720CCA(comparable to Optima) for 59.99.

Im about to get one, and prob wouldnt hurt to re do the electrical wiring while im already in the process

i just bought a 99 with 40 k this week and my fuel guage is intermittent, sometimes have to tap on the console below the guage to get it to work. im assuming a bad connection but the previous owner said she had the same problem repaired once (guaage cluster replaced) and still happens. also my monsoon display sometimes looks scrambled and the volume **** sometimes is wacky. do you think this is all related somehow?
