Help! 7 coil packs - 1 missing - Bad?
The T/A I am in the process buying has 7 coil packs. I don't know why 1 was missing, but I planned to add the 8th when I get the car.
So, today - my fiance mentioned this to her dad, who is a mechanic. He said this is very bad and will cause the other coil packs to go bad. He said I'd be replacing the coil packs soon if I get this car. Yes. These are the high-dollar red ones.
Is this a bad thing that there are only 7? The car runs smooth and is fast as hell. If I just add the 8th one, will it be ok?
Why would anyone run with just 7? Would this damage anything else in the engine.
Appreciate any help. I'm a newbie to this sort of thing. Trying to learn.

Huh? If a coil pack is missing then it's only running on 7 cylinders, which means that it won't run smooth or fast as hell. One of these two doesn't fit in your description.

Ok, so if there were only 7, it would be misfiring. Well, this engine purrs like a kitten, so here's what I'm thinking....
Maybe there are 8 coil packs. Just 7 of the fancy red ones and one cheap one? Would that make more sense?
I'm going to go find out exactly what's up with the car first thing in the morning. My financing still has not gone through, so maybe that's a good thing.

If you find out it only has 7 for sure i wouldn't buy the car because there is no saying how long the guy ran it that way and the damage that has been caused to the one cylinder that wasn't firing. it's hard on the rotating assembly and bad on that cylinder because fuel is getting dumped into that cylinder and not combusting. It may seem like it runs somewhat ok right now until the thing hydro-locks that cylinder.

MSD's are not worth the money, but since you already have them, go ahead and get the last one, and plug it up. I dont think there will be any damage to the cylinder. Its just dead.
My advice. Pull the plug in that cylinder and turn it over to get any puddled gas out. Go get a stocker from AZ or somewhere and slap it on. It should run a whole lot better. If it doesnt, then consider the one coil a small investment that kept you fom making a large (bad) investment. Not that these cars are investment material or anything, but you get me.

ok, obviously a big time newbie here. I apologize for my ignorance. I love Firebirds, but don't know much about cars... yet.
I inspected the car again today and the car does have 8 coil packs. 7 MSD and 1 generic one.
Don't know why. Maybe the previous owner was adding them one at a time or maybe one failed and he put whatever old one he had back on. This car was a trade-in and is being sold by a dealer, so I have no way to find out for sure.
Is there a chance that having a different one on there damage anything?
If the deal goes through, I'll add the 8th one right away.
