Default 3.42 gears worth swapping on a A4 with 2.73?

I have a auto with stock 2.73 gears I want to know if its worth the hassle to swap to a 3.42 gear? I just wanted a little bit quicker accelartion for the street. what else would need to be changed? speed sensor etc so the tach and odometer are not out of wack.

if your doing the work then it will only help but if your paying for it then try a set of 3.73's or 4.10's with the A4 !!!!!!

YES, YES, and YES. Had the 3.42's on my A4 and it was a diff car. Add a stall/sticky tire and youre good to go.

3:42 is a def good upgrade, or 3:73's , 4:10's are bit too much if you have to drive it much for daily use, especially on the highway gas mileage will go to **** with 4:10's, so i say do it!

yup...I went from 2.73's to 3.42's...It definately woke the car up. I would recommend it. Gas mileage did take a slight drop..i went from being able to get like 28mpg on the highway...to about 25 or so..Not a huge drop...but with gas prices as high as they are today its worth considering.

I did 3.42 from 2.73 and a stall at the same time - got a deal on a complete low mileage rear from an M6 car. If just doing gears only I'd go w/3.73.

I did this exact swap. It really gave the car a lot of extra snap. MPG in town actually increased (with a light foot). Mileage on the highway suffered a lot, about 4 mpg. I do SO much driving on the highway (20-30k yearly), I should have kept the 2.73s. If you drive normally, go for it - the 3.42s really are noticeable and are a good middle ground to still be livable on the freeway.

is a good improvement, they wont fit your carrier with out a spacer,
or buy the thicker 2 series 342s aftermarket. they might whine though.
you also need a tune for the spedo-hand held will work+firm up the shifts.
look for a used one.

You will need a flash tune... Find a guy in your area and since it is such a small tune should only be about $10. I went from 3.23 to 3.43 (had too) and i can feel the difference. 3.73 are great but mine is a daily drive and personally i think that you shouldnt do 4.10's

I wouldn't do it until you get a stall. Chances are, you'll be happy enough with the stall change that the gears won't be an issue.

Many guys that do gears still end up wanting a bigger stall. But many guys that do a bigger stall end up being fine with keeping the stock gears.

go for it.. get a 3.42 or 3.73. I run 3.73's and still get 24mpg on the highway. A stall would be a ton better imo. I had 2.73's with a 3600 stall and it was insanely quick on the street but would still cruise on the highway and get 28mpg. Only gripe I have a 2.73's on an A4 is that the car shifts just as you go through the traps in the 1/4 mile and a stall will feel a bit on the loose side which is only really noticeable if you have loud exhaust. Either way though the gears would make a good improvement over 2.73 gears.

Great mod. My old car went from 2:73 ot 3:42 and big difference! From experience I would do this again. I did lose about 5 MPG on the hwy. And gas being high you might to consider this!

Couldn't of said it better. I plan on getting some 3.42s or 3.73s this fall.

used 3.42s or new are pretty damn cheap right?
I don't like the idea of loosing 5mpg though, that would suck. especially with the gas prices at 3.70 for 93 octane
