Default 3.42 gears Vs. 4.10 gears Benefits?

I was considering different gears to put in my 00 TA WS6(4.10). What kind of gas mileage drop should I expect? Will these new gears affect the drivability of my car? What is the usual cost of doing this? Will it be a noticable difference in torque or horsepower? I am open to any info or suggestions!

Might want to put this in the correct section.

4.10's definitely feel a lot better than the stock gears. I think I paid something like $200 for the gears, $100 for an install kit and $300 for installation. So that comes out to about $600, which seems like a lot, now that I look at it I don't mind though, cause I've seen some improperly set up gears, and they never stop whining. You lose horsepower with the 4.10 gear, but nothing you will notice because the RPM's climb faster.

As far as mileage is concerned, on the freeway it isn't a huge difference. Cruising RPM might change by about 300. I still routinely get 200+ mpg if I don't get on it. After installing the 4.10's, I do a lot more 1-3-5 shifts than I use to, this also helps with MPG around the city.

Remember that sticky tires + 4.10's = not good. They will make the rear-end weaker than it already is.

Careful for the rev limiter, it comes up quick when coming out of the hole

+1 to that, I had the same worries when I got mine. MPG didn't really effect me like I thought it would. I'm going to put 4.10s in every car i get. But like DAGeneral says, watch your rear on powershifting and "constantly" slamming gears and with ET Streets at the track. You will eventually break your rear if you do, no question to that.

I picked up 4 tenths from 3.42's to 4.10's, and lost 3 mpg on the hwy (not sure in the city). I liked them, but they whined (got the whole rear cheap, not a biggie). The only thing I didnt like was 4th ended about 120 mph with the stock tune. Hope this helps your decision.

do you drive an auto? cuz i have an m6 and my fourth ends right above 100 mph but I didn't notice much a drop in mpg maybe 2 or 3 but I still drive very spirited with my lt1 and routinely get 20+ mpg and ls1 should be getting better

another thing to consider is what your going to do in the future. if you ever plan on camming or spraying your car, the 4.10s wil be too much and you will pass the finish line (1/4 mile) at the limiter, or in 5th unless you go with a taller tire. if you just plan on having a stock or bolt on car 4.10s wont be a problem, just DO NOT launch them hard on the stock rear, especially if you have a DR or slick.

another thing to consider is 3.73's or 3.90's, you will still feel a noticable difference with both over the 3.42, they are stronger than 4.10's, and are better set up for future mods. we carry them all, most are in stock . give us a call monday.

Depends on how much you value your gas mileage.

My 4.10 gears dropped gas milage about 1.5 mpg. Other mods increase milage ( like headers, heads)

I actually lost 10rwhp with the gear change. Car will be quicker though.

Average cost for gears and install $600

Do LT1s and LS1s have a different rev limiter? According to http://www.xse.com/leres/bin/gearrat...mference=81.49, 4th would end at 113mph with a 6k shift.

My cars mpgs was almost uneffected by adding 4:10s. Dropped less than 1mpg. Drivability actually gets better as you dont have to slip the clutch as much to get the car moving. Clutch will hold a lil better too.

stock 16's. Drove around for a month before I got it tuned and recalibrated, did many 4th gear pulls to the end, and it was right at 120-121. No BS in this reply, stock cam also.

I think I lost maybe 1mpg with the 4.10's.. I love em though really woke the car up.

If you end up camming the car. You may run out of RPM but if you are camming it you will most likely be doing new springs and push rods.

So I suppose you can bump the rev limiter up a few rpm and I guess you'll be at where you were before you had the 4.10's because right now I think I'm about 200-300 rpm higher in 6th then when i had 3.42. I may be wrong about that whole thing though.
