aftermarket steering wheels legal?
does anybody know if i can put an aftermarket steering wheel on my car and take the factory one off? i'd really like to do this but wasn't sure about the air bag. does it pretty much just depend on the people you get it inspected by or what's the deal?

You would probably have to contact an automotive/DOT/NHTSA specialist lawyer to know for sure (if it's actually legal), but yes, it does come down to the ***** inspecting your car.
I am in one of the WORST states as far as inspection goes (probably only second to Cali!), and I go right through with a Sparco 375 suede wheel.
But I DID tape over the Service Vehicle Soon light (you WILL get this when you disconnect the airbag), and the rest of my car is legal (stock cats/down pipe, exhaust manifolds, air pump, NO tint, only slightly lowered, but SLP TOTL catback [NOT too loud!], and lid).
I know if they see ANY dash lights (not just the SES light) at my inspection station, you FAIL, NO chance for any explanation!!!

The safety ratings of the F-body aren't exactly world class, so why would you want to make your car even more dangerous by removing one of it's few safety features? I would keep the stock wheel and air bag and spend the money on a big cam.

Depends on your state. You could probably call the local state patrol office and ask, they could tell you. I don't think that it would be illegal, simply because there are so many cars still out there that don't have airbags at all and they pass OK. But do check and make sure.

I took mine out over here in Michigan. I figured that at the speeds I am driving an airbag deployment wouldn't do much anyway... It does allow me to see the gauges a little better though. These F-car wheels are huge. Maybe put a round pad in the center like at the go-kart track if you're worried?
