Default why avoid the 98-99's Ls1's?????

A couple of my friends that have Ls1's said to avoid the 98's and 99's. I heard that the '00 is ok and best years were 2001 and 2002. One guy (with a 2002 SS) told me that the 02's have the Ls6 block. I know 01-02's have Ls6 intake manifolds. Why avoid the 98-99's (if at all)?........any help guys? Im just looking for the right F body and trying to do my homework

You don't have to avoid any year. An LS1 is an LS1 is an LS1. If I'm not mistaken only a few '02 cars got an LS6 block somehow or another, but I'm not certain.
There is a few pros and cons to each year, read here. https://ls1tech.com/forums/showpost....80&postcount=2

The ONLY reason to avoid 98's and 99's is the interior color scheme. The tan on dark grey looks fine, but the all grey color scheme is pretty damn bad. Its like a million shades of non-matching greys, every piece of the interior seems to be a different shade of grey, and this applies to all Camaros, Formulas, and Trans Ams. I own one, and it looks pretty damn bad.

The all black scheme on 2000-2002's looks a lot better, unless you get a Camaro with MC hammer pants cloth seats

It is, I looked at 10-12 different LS1's of all years and types(Z28's, SS, Formulas, Trans Ams, etc) before buying my Z28, which I got a really nice deal on.(13k back in 2003, it was mint and had 39k miles on it).

I wouldn't go as far as saying to "avoid" any year LS1, they're all great. My 98 has been great, and it's supposedly the shittiest year. I get a kick out of when some of the later year LS1 guys think they have an LS6. A local kid tried telling me he had the LS6 block (I checked, he didn't), heads, cam, and "lid".

dont sweat the small differences. theyre not enough to worry about unless youre keeping it stock which is a waste anyway.

The early year oil pump was sometimes an issue.

Other than the dumbed down guages after 98, things just kept getting a little better each year.

97-98 blocks cannot be bored at all. Think they can be honed out a bit but not far. This is only a problem if your cylinder walls need cleaned up. 98-99 have a bigger cam too

Later years had an LS6 style intake. not LS6 block.

However if I was to buy a Trans-Am again it would be 2000+.
Reason being that 98 PCM's are different to later years, you hear of people in the HP tuners forum having trouble reflashing it. Not really a problem if your not modding your car. But it would be something personally I would avoid.

Also I prefer the looks of 2000-2002.

Also the 01 and 02 are considered to be worse oil consumers. Mine doesn't seem to use any that I can account for but that is the word out.

Anyone know if the information about the single exhaust in that FAQ was accurate?
"WS6s had single outlet exhaust (all others had duals)"

IE, should ALL 98 Camaro SS have a dual exhast?

98' had a steel gas tank ... 99' had a plastic gas tank
98-99 had the smaller (not positive about the '98's)26# injectors, AIR/EGR, bigger cam, less capable flowing manifolds, LS1 intake ... and I believe the earlier LS1 block actually was thicker/strong than the few '02's with the LS6 block.

no 98's and 99's had the bigger 28# injectors. they got smaller from 2000-2001, and then got big again in 2002. 99% positive on that.
