A4's came with either 2.73 or 3.23. Yours came with 3.42 (GU6). Check out the calculator at www.f-body.org/gears/ to see if they might have been changed.

3.42 is not a bad gear, but there are better, all depending on what your plans are

I've heard 3.73's are much of a diff for the cost. I would go 4.11's in a street car unless you plan on doing forced induction soon. And 600 bucks would be about right.

I would go to a place you trust will do a good job. I suggest putting up your location, then post in the regional section of the forum for shop recommendations.

4.10's are good for the M6. One of my buddies is runnin 4.56's in his M6, but he's also got a hellashis motor in his car hehe!!! Off the topic, would 4.56's be good with everything motor and tranny wise being stock?

I install my own and the gears alone were only 180-190ish shipped to my door. 4.10s for an m6 without a doubt!

Yeah, I have always heard put 4.10s for a m6 and 3.73s in a a4. Although, my last car which was a 1995 Camaro Z28 A4 had 4.10s in it. You could always go along with some maintence to your car by draining your diff. fluid out and count the teeth and do the math. You might want to consider putting a 9" in depending on what you are wanting to do.

go with 4.10s, but make sure you take it somewhere where they know what theyre doing. i had a hell of a time with mine, i had to replace the 4.10s with a new set because the installer was way off. make sure they know their stuff.
