Head Swap Or Not I have just purchased a running 2000 Z28 Camaro LS1 and 6 speed trans from a salvage yard ,the previous owner had installed lower control arms sub frame connectors and headers the number on the heads is 853 most likely stock but I really dont know. I am on a budget and My question, is it worth the money to swap the heads out for a set of the Z06 243's I have found alot of good info on the 243 heads but not any on the 853's how good are the 853's does any one know what the intake runners are. and any other info on the heads I know the 243 has 210 intake runners and a 64 cc chamber and 2.00 1.55 valves. I am going to install this engine and trans into my 95 chevy S10 and want it to be streetable the S10 has a tired 4.3 T.B.I. and a 5 speed in it now so I know a bone stock LS1 is going to be a blast to drive but before I install it I know I am going to install a good cam and do alittle work on the heads unless I go with the 243's Thanks for your help.

853's are your stock cast head which dont flow very well at all in comparison with the LS6's. I'm not how sure good the stock 243's flow, but I do know they flow great when you give them a good CNC Port. I will be purchasing either ported LS6's ($1199) or some 5.3's ($1000) for added compression. Either would be a good choice IMO.

i say for your application the 243's will be perfectly fine, if you want some added performance, you can look into fifedogg said about ls6 heads or some truck 5.3l heads

Buying the car has gutted my project money for now and I know I still have several Items to buy like wiring harness (current performance) headers, motor mounts and the list goes on for no telling what else. So I dought I will be able to spend 1100.00 on a set of ported heads, I wish I could but I dought I will be able to spend over 4 or 5 hundred on a set of used heads. I am just tring to find out if any one knows how good the 853's are. I know where I can get a set of 4.8 and a set of 5.3 heads pretty cheap. What makes these heads a good choice over the 853's thanks
